PeterPan Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I have 12 oz and 16 oz glasses in my kitchen, very hodgepodge because things have broken over the years. I'd like to move over to all 16 oz (or slightly larger?), probably clear and stackable. Something everyday that fits well in the hand, good for drinking water, etc. Any recommendations? 1 Quote
Carol in Cal. Posted July 14 Posted July 14 We break glasses in this household. So when our current set gets low, we head over to the local restaurant supply store and buy a down of the kind that have 6 or 8 facets around them. Those are less breakable than most and come in large as well as small sizes. They are clear but not stackable. I like them. 2 Quote
Ananda Posted July 14 Posted July 14 We have been happy with Duralex Picardie. They are hard to break, but when they do it is in a million tiny pieces (like corelle). 3 Quote
Bootsie Posted July 14 Posted July 14 IKEA is my go-to for inexxpensive, stackable glassware. 7 Quote
Pawz4me Posted July 14 Posted July 14 We use Tervis. I understand people not wanting plastic, but we live in a humid area and condensation drives me batty, plus arthritis makes my hands clumsy so I need unbreakable. 4 Quote
mmasc Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) Tervis is my all-time favorite. I have these in clear and they last quite a long time before looking “roughed up.” I only have one of the bigger, 24-ounce ones, but it’s nice too. I just prefer the 16-ounce as my everyday drinkware. eta: reasons I like them: like @Pawz4me, I don’t like my glasses to sweat. Like, I *really* can’t stand it. These won’t. I also don’t want breakage (teen boys household and they take these cups everywhere. Everywhere lol. Also, I’m one of those people that can smell that weird “wet dog” smell in real glass cups sometimes. It literally never happens in a Tervis cup. I have no idea why or what this phenomenon is🤷🏻♀️There’s a thread on this a few weeks back if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Edited July 14 by mmasc 2 Quote
Bambam Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I have a multi-color set of Bentley tumblers (20 ounce though) that I bought on Amazon. I think someone here recommended them as the bottoms don't puddle water in the dishwasher. I could see they might be problematic if someone had gripping issues because they are straight sides - and not slippery but not exactly grippy either. I appreciate the variety of colors, and it helps everyone keep track of which glass is theirs. However, when it is just the two of us, we use Tervis tumblers - again I have a mix of patterns so no confusion about which is yours. I appreciate the fact the liquid stays cooler longer and there is no outside condensation. 1 Quote

LOL You're right I forgot about the restaurant supply! 9 hours ago, Ananda said: Duralex Picardie. Ooo, I was looking at them on amazon. It seems like Crate and Barrel, lots of places sell them. So you like how they feel in your hand? Ironically, we've slowed down on the glass breakage. We used to wash a lot by hand and (shhh) dd was sort of clutzy breaking stuff. So we're stable, just stable with a hodgepodge, lol. 6 hours ago, Bootsie said: IKEA is my go-to for inexxpensive, stackable glassware. I think my small 8oz glasses are from there. And you're right, they're perfectly fine. I'll go see what they have these days. 2 hours ago, mmasc said: Tervis is my all-time favorite. When I use the 12 oz, the cumulative effect over the day leaves me short on water and a bit headachy/dehydrated. I'd probably actually do really well with a 24 oz, but like y'all predicted I probably don't want plastic. But I could think about that. I could replace my hodgepodge with all 16 oz and then have 2-3 special 24 oz cups for me. They just need to be able to go in the dishwasher because I'm lazy like that. 2 hours ago, mmasc said: Also, I’m one of those people that can smell that weird “wet dog” smell in real glass cups sometimes. I That's hilarious. I missed that thread, lol. I don't put ice in the cup so I'm not concerned with sweating. I walk up to the spot where I use it, drink 16-24 oz, then put it down. Repeat 4-6 times during the day. If you drink from the side of a tervis cup, is it awkward? I don't want to use a spout or a straw. 1 hour ago, Bambam said: a multi-color set of Bentley tumblers (20 ounce though) that I bought on Amazon. mmasc Posted July 14 Posted July 14 No, drinking from the side isn’t awkward lol. I only like the one 24-ounce because I like tons of ice, so if you aren’t using ice at all, I prefer the 16-ounce. They’re just nice glasses, imo. 1 Quote

I'm thinking your right that something in that 16-18 oz range is more sensible. I'm also realizing I need to make sure they fit on the top rack of our dw, whew. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted July 14 Posted July 14 We only drink out of glass or stainless steel. We have IKEA glssses and insulated stainless steel tumblers and water bottles. 1 Quote

My 12 oz glasses have these external ribs that bug me. It makes them stack, but they also bug me. I looked through the IKEA glasses and they seemed to all max out at 15 oz. I'm going to think about the sensory thing some more and hold various glasses. I'm not sure if it's the ribs or the way the glasses have aged. My glasses with no ribs are super super smooth on the outside, while the glasses with the ribs have gotten kind of murky. They're probably not dramatically different in age and they all get washed in the dw, so it's some kind of difference in the quality/material. I think my paws definitely prefer smooth. I just don't know if smooth with ribs work or if it has to be completely completely smooth. 1 Quote

They my be called a pint glass (they are not beer mugs with a handle) and they stack. 2 Quote

One child here insists that one of them broke just taking it out of the dishwasher. I did not witness this, so I have no idea what the circumstances were, but we ended up with glass all over the inside of the dishwasher. Though it broke in a chunkier way, and not thousands of micro shards, so that was nice. 1 Quote

ktgrok Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Our Ikea glasses kept breaking (they were fairly cheap, to be fair) so I switched us to 16 oz mason jars. Love them. I also have 8 oz ones for smaller drinks for kids, etc. 1 Quote
AbcdeDooDah Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Widemouth mason or Kerr jars. Been using them since childhood. 1 Quote

I adore my Tervis tumblers for the kids and for me because they have lids and wash up in the dishwasher so nicely! For glasses, we just buy a bunch of the basic $1 glasses from Dollar Tree every so often. 2 Quote
Lori D. Posted July 15 Posted July 15 (edited) We have a version of these. Which are pretty much everything you did NOT ask for, lol, but... in case you want to expand your wish list: These are heavy-duty glass, not stackable, but with a smooth rolled glass rim that resists chipping and cracking. We have a set of 6 of the 14-oz and 8 of the 21-oz. The 21-oz is pretty heavy when filled up, so I prefer the 14-oz size. We've had them for over 35 years, and have only had to replace 2 -- 1 because I microwaved water in it and it did not like that and cracked into 2 pieces. 🫣 We got them at the local Good Will store, so not very expensive at all. KidsHappen Posted July 15 Posted July 15 (edited) I have used these since I got married 33 years ago. They are pretty sturdy and easily replaceable. They are made by Anchor Hocking and the style is called Central Park. Walmart also carries a knock off that is exactly the same. Edited July 15 by KidsHappen 1 Quote
silver Posted July 15 Posted July 15 We have these: https://bormioliroccous.com/collections/drinkware/products/bormioli-rocco-rock-bar-16-25-oz-cooler-stackable-drinking-glasses-set-of-6 They stack, and we've only broken one (when it fell from the top shelf while someone was trying to grab something next to it). They come in multiple sizes, but the linked is what I primarily use. 1 Quote

You're right, I forgot to look at Williams Sonoma. And maybe the things you like and what someone else didn't, hence the donation. I will go look, thanks. 🙂 Quote
