Just in time to destroy my after-Christmas budget, my fridge has died.

Recommended Posts

Any appliance repair folks here? The fridge is getting power, the lights are on, I can hear the whatever-it-is humming and it sounds like normal (though it's not shutting off). The fridge & freezer are room temp, evidently since sometime yesterday since everything from the freezer melted into a huge puddle in the freezer and onto the floor.

It's a 2001 Whirlpool Gold side-by-side. Have there been big improvements in energy efficiency since then? I'm weighing the benefits of repairing vs. replacing.

I'm also throwing away a *whole lot* of food this morning! :cursing:

All I can tell you, is that when our refrigerator died (purchased in 1997, died in 2004), we were told it would be cheaper to replace it than fix it. Only a repair man could tell you for certain. So, in 2004 I replaced my GE Profile $3,000 refrigerator, with a top-model white (w/ ice maker) for about $600.

Yes, there have been some improvements in energy efficiency -- but you won't notice it as much as say, when my dad replaced the 1975 refrigerator with the 2004 model!

On a long gone fridge, I was once successful in a similar situation: unplugged, cleaned it all up, vacuumed where the condensor coils are (either on back or underneath) and plugged back in. It's worth a shot in case it just overheated maybe?

I don't know what is wrong, but if you are not stuck on new then you could call appliance repair shops and ask if they have any refrigerators that have been refurbished. My parents got a fridge for about $75 from one of these shops about 2 years ago and it works great. If you are bent on new, then call around and see if there are any returns or dented freight that the store will give you a discount on. We got a dishwasher that way for 50% off and 4 years later it is working great. The store even delivered it for free after rebate!

Our old dishwasher is spewing soap and water all over, the stove is rusting out and down to two burners, and the fridge, well, it's still cold :). How does one keep up with these things?

I guess I'm very hard on appliances. I keep telling myself to budget some money every month for appliance repairs & eventual replacement, but I never do it. :banghead:
