madteaparty Posted June 23 Posted June 23 Would really love to pack a paperback or two. What I love: George Saunders Kate Atkinson Jane Gardam Madeline Miller Valerie Perrin and usually a number of books from imprint Europa (translated popular European books) Exception to Europa imprint: do not like what America liked about Elena Ferrante but loved her earlier (much shorter/same theme) stuff. Another exception: did not like at all The Postcard after 5 pages in. i liked some of Lianne Moriarty did not like the Nightingale, Normal People, Demon Copperhead or really anything that has won the Pulitzer 😉 Suggestions? If you like the historical side of Gardam and Atkinson, I really enjoyed To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. I'm not in the least a fantasy fan, but the period detail in the time travel hooked me. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Say_Nothing_of_the_Dog Quote

wintermom Posted June 23 Posted June 23 (edited) I'm hoping to get back into reading soon. My vision hasn't been great due to cataracts, but as soon as I can read more comfortably I want to get back to this history book, "The war that ended peace: The road to 1914," by Margaret MacMillan. It's not exactly 'light summer reading' but it's really interesting. A tennis friend recommended it. I'm on page 28 of 645. ETA: Sorry, I thought this was the ongoing reading thread. I didn't mean my book choice to be a suggestion - unless you need a doorstopper kind of book for the summer! 😂 Edited June 23 by wintermom 1 Quote
Miss Tick Posted June 23 Posted June 23 I'm a similar vein as Madeline Miller are : Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes Elektra by Jennifer Saint Neither is based on an epic like the Old it Odyssey, so it felt like there was more "reading between the lines" or deeper dives into mythology that I wasn't familiar with. Of the two, I liked Stone Blind better, Elektra is unrelentingly bitter. 1 Quote
