MercyA Posted June 21 Posted June 21 DD and I both have thick, wavy hair with random coarse, kinky hairs throughout. The trouble with the coarse hairs is that most only grow to be several inches long. Add humidity and we both have a constant "halo" of short frizzy hairs at the top of our head. It's very frustrating. We both have oily hair, so we can't skip washing or pile on moisturizing products. Styling creams and hair spray help a little. Any recommendations or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Spryte Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Not exactly inexpensive, but I like Olaplex for taming the halo. My hair was breaking off, I think, and this has really helped. I use 0 and 1 twice a week, the shampoo and conditioner daily, and I like the mask as well (I think it’s 8), but not too often, maybe once or twice a week. I also tried their oil, but prefer the Moroccan Oil Light for taming remaining frizzies. I ran out of the conditioner recently, and it was noticeable. 1 Quote
Pawz4me Posted June 21 Posted June 21 My hair type is different than yours, so most of my answers involve moisture. But I'll mention two things in case they're helpful. This is the hairspray my hair lady recommends. She claims it works great for taming frizz. I haven't tried it yet. And I found out quite by accident that texture paste seems to help prevent my hair from frizzing as much. I don't know how it would work for longer hair, mine is a layered pixie. 1 Quote
AmandaVT Posted June 21 Posted June 21 I have curly, coarse, but very dry hair (it drinks up all the products, even straight up oil). I do like this company a lot and it has a hair quiz! https://discovertreluxe.com/pages/curl-quiz Their products work well and smell really good. 1 1 Quote
KidsHappen Posted June 21 Posted June 21 My hair is prone to breakage, split ends and course tangly ends. I am currently looking for a good damage repair shampoo. Quote

I've been really happy with the Redken Acidic Bonding products, which are specifically formulated to repair damaged hair, strengthen the bonds, and prevent future damage. The shampoo is sulfate free and very gentle, to avoid stripping moisture from hair that is dry and brittle to begin with, but it also gets my hair really clean. And all the products are low-Ph, which is supposed to improve hydration. I first heard about it from Lab Muffin on YouTube; she's a chemistry PhD who works in the cosmetics industry in Australia. She's Asian, with thick black hair that she bleaches and dyes bright colors, which is super damaging, and she said that the Redken Acidic Bonding products were a total game-changer for her. They're certainly not cheap, but I've tried a ton of products, including expensive treatments like Olaplex and Kerastase, and IMO the acidic bonding products have made the most noticeable difference. My hair is naturally wavy and before, if I let it air dry and then tried to brush it, it would turn into a giant bush and would tangle very easily. Since I started using the acidic bonding products, my hair not only feels softer, it's like the individual hairs just "slide" past each other instead of catching and tangling. I can let it air dry and finger-comb it and it just looks shiny and wavy, or if I want it sleek and straight I can do that in just a few minutes with a dryer-brush and it will stay that way for several days. I had gotten to the point of just always wearing my hair in a pony tail or bun, and now I can wear it down and it looks nice instead of looking like crazy witch hair. 2 Quote

This is exactly what I was looking for. Does it smell good? Quote

ETA: Although the products are expensive, they are quite concentrated and a little goes a long way. It's similar to the Olaplex products in that way — a literal pea-sized amount of the shampoo is plenty for shoulder length hair, with tons of lather. Edited June 21 by Corraleno 2 Quote
KungFuPanda Posted June 22 Posted June 22 This stuff is amazing. I use the lighter hold because I have fine hair, but they make a stronger hold too. You can buy a really small size to try it. It’s expensive, but it lasts a long time because you don’t have to use a lot of product. I tend to use a curl cream and this, but I have to go with super light hold for both so my hair doesn’t get weighed down. 2 1 Quote
J-rap Posted June 22 Posted June 22 My hair becomes super frizzy all over with heat and humidity... This is going to seem like a strange solution, but I've found that if I put a beanie hat on my head after washing it, and let it dry that way, it dries quite smooth and flat and actually stays that way fairly well unless it gets very damp again. 1 Quote
