I *do* have the cleaner in the tub with little tray and brush.  It does work and restores to a point.

Today I took my fine jewelry into the store where dh and I recently made a purchase, to have these pieces professional cleaned.  There was not that much but I also have a couple of rings I inherited.  One was my Mom's wedding band and the other was my Grandmother's wedding or engagement ring.  Also, I found a diamond ring about 30 years ago in a bathroom.  (An attempt was made to search for the owner but to no avail).

The sales associate from whom we made that purchase several months ago checked the mountings and prongs of each piece.  She placed each piece in a container with what was called a liquid sanitizer.  And, then she blasted with steam but she said it wasn't too hot and it was really mostly air.  ??

QUESTION - The professional treatment is much better than the liquid cleaner you buy.  But, I'd rather not lug my jewelry in 1-2 times a year.  I know they say ammonia is used for diamonds among other things.  Is it feasible to buy the container with solution (still not sure what it is) and find a knock off version of the sprayer (steam/air)?  While the liquid tub works the gems in my jewelry look more "fully" cleaned and restored to higher sparkle after going to the jewelers.

Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks!

Yes, you can mix ammonia & water 50/50. I think that was the instructions for the jewelry cleaner I just decluttered. Or you can just use windex & wipe.

Yes, thanks! That's the solution.  Will try that.  And, I asked DH if we had a small steamer and to my surprise, he said we have one so I may be able to duplicate what the pros do!

Check, but sometimes taking your purchases back to the jewelry store keeps your warranty valid. I lost a small rock from my rings and had to *pay* for it because I had not kept up with the 2x year cleanings, sigh.

Oh, I didn't even think about that.  Will have to look at receipt.  Thanks for the tip!  Did your insurance kick in to help pay for the missing rock/gem?
