Elizabeth86 Posted May 26 Posted May 26 I think well water has caused stains in the toilets at my in-laws’ house. What can you do to get rid of the stains? Quote
Myra Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Pumice stone works great - you can order from Amazon ones that are made/shaped/fit specifically for this use. 1 Quote
kbutton Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Yes to the pumice, but CLR is much easier. It can be done periodically to stay ahead of it. 2 1 Quote
EKS Posted May 26 Posted May 26 I third pumice. We have hard water stains that don't yield to any chemical I've ever tried, so pumice is my go-to. 1 1 Quote
KidsHappen Posted May 26 Posted May 26 I usually put the toilet bowl cleaner in and let set for about an hour then scrub and flush. If there are any stains left then another vote for a pumice stone. I usually have stains in the very bottom and back in the hole where the water comes in and it is hard to get a regular pumice stone in there. I went to Walmart in the beauty section and found a small pedicure kit with a small round pencil shaped pumice stone that fits down in there perfectly. 1 1 Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 26 Posted May 26 CLR first. If you are going to use pumice, soak the stone first. It can scratch some ceramic finishes in toilets which makes stains more likely to cling there in the future. If you know you have hard water at the farm, you might put getting a water softener on the project list. It will help protect your laundry and lower your shower scrub time also. 2 1 Quote
PeterPan Posted May 27 Posted May 27 I'm linking a youtube video on how to clean your toilet. You can shut the water off so you can apply Bar Keeper's Friend, etc. and get it clean. You'd like to try the least abrasive things first. And yes, CLR, The Works, anything with acid would be a good place to start. Blue scrub pads (not green) are less abrasive and not going to scratch the porcelain finish. If you scrub it aggressively with something hard, you'll have more issues in the long run. If you haven't tried Bar Keeper's Friend, I'd definitely do that before going to the method of last resort. I'd rather have a slightly tinged bowl that isn't scratched, just me. 1 Quote
wisdomandtreasures Posted May 27 Posted May 27 (edited) Pumice. I tried vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, OxiClean, Comet, Bar Keeper's Friend, borax, and Scrubbing Bubbles, and nothing worked but a pumice stone.
