probably should have posted in preK-K board. Oops.

I’m specifically looking for early readers geared toward USA residents (so that eliminates Usborne and a couple others).

I would love to get some more quality readers in our library system but so far I’m seeing too many obstacles. Like, if it’s available on Amazon it’s a third party seller/price is jacked up etc.

I am not privy to the vendors allowed but I can tell you it won’t help to direct the higher ups to Reading Resources or the All About Spelling website.

I saw some beautifully illustrated All About Reading early readers referenced on this board but I don’t see an easy way to order them.

Any suggestions that I’m overlooking?

I did look into McGuffey but I think they’ll want something more modern. That also had some red flags on Amazon (reviews saying their copy had no images).

I personally was never a huge fan of Dick & Jane books. We do have Bob books. Anything else I’m overlooking?

Probably can’t order them. I would need them available on a site like Amazon (not third party). I don’t know what vendors we use but I know I can’t get them to order from misc program sites and school supplies sites. My last library used Baker & Taylor. It would need to be available on a site like that.

Do you mean phonetically decodable books?  I don't know if this fits the bill but how about the I See Sam series?

Yes. Basically something with few words, small words, early phonogram sounds…

But I’m not sure those sets would be durable in library settings. Looks like they are sets of small paperbacks. Hmm.

That's a good point.  Isn't there a way to laminate paperbacks?  Not that you necessarily want to be doing that!

Usborne has phonetic readers and they come in library binding.  They are available in the US and our public library has some.  We are also a big fan of the Usborne Beginner Science books.

I am avoiding them because I’ve used a couple of their books with rhyming/phonograms in the past and it will throw you off if you’re American. Like “row” was a problem word.

I haven’t used them but I think the American Language Series books are decodable.

Aww those look nice. But I don’t know if they have a hardcover version. With the Bob books, we have hardcover sets. They bound several stories together.

Scholastic, maybe? Leveled Readers & Authentic Texts | Scholastic Teacher Store

I know I've seen Scholastic materials at basically every bookstore and teaching store, vs just online, so if you can't order from their website, but can use it to get a book list, you can likely find the same books at Amazon, Office Depot, Barnes and Noble, etc.

we may already carry a variety of that brand but no idea if I can search our collection for specific sets. Our collection is huge but I’m trying to figure out things I can easily recommend to parents of emerging readers that are decodeable. When I say Bob books I know I can type in Bob books in our system and narrow it down with call numbers.

Scholastic has little leveled sets like Bob books, so those might serve.

I’ll research these. I’m just worried about requesting something we may already have but not sure how to search for them in our system. I might be able to locate some on the shelves but the call numbers don’t always translate to easy search terms for sets.

It's funny how things change. The Nora Gaydos books are no longer available. They were colorful and engaging.

I know it's not what you are looking for exactly, but funphonics.com has some nice, free, printable readers.

Are you on Facebook? This group would probably have plenty of suggestions for you: https://www.facebook.com/share/mEMyYYy86Qasu31H/?mibextid=A7sQZp

It's a group specifically about decodable books, and I know people have discussed library use before.

One I used a few of with my dyslexic reader is the Dog on a Log series... https://www.amazon.com/s?k=dog+on+a+log+books&crid=2TE2SZZA3ETCH&sprefix=dog+on+a+%2Caps%2C133&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_9

Those are available in hard cover (they are a bit longer though, so maybe not exactly what you are looking for).

I just saw a presentation on Simple Word books yesterday.  I like that they go up to chapter books, but I don't have any experience with them in hand so you would have to do some research:

https://simplewordsbooks.com/

I googled:  Simple Word Books on Amazon and they sell single copies.

Also look at Flyleaf publishing.  Idk if they sell single books, but I used the free online version for students during covid. The illustrations are beautiful and it was easy to find books that followed phonic patterns that I wanted to reinforce.    https://flyleafpublishing.com/reading-series-one-decodable-books
