UNAPOLOGETIC_SCHOOLHOUSE Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I need some advise! We recently started using CLE Level 1 with my first grader. I have fallen in love with it! We're only on our 2nd light unit but so far I am very impressed. We are also doing Explode the Code. We will start the CLE Reading soon. I feel like we are doing too much. I love Explode the Code too but it's just a lot of Language Arts in a day. I'm worried that too much might lead to less retention. Has anyone every gone from Explode the Code to CLE? If so, is CLE Language Arts enough, especially in phonics? Should I eliminate Explode the Code and just do CLE LA and Reading? I'm open to any feedback anyone has! I'm so torn because I love them both so much but I don't want either to just become busy work. Thanks! Quote
Clarita Posted May 1 Posted May 1 I have not used CLE, but here's what I think. If CLE seems complete to you right now just use it as your only. You'll figure out it's not enough if at some point your child seems unable to read and spell like you think they should. If that point arises it wouldn't be too late to supplement with Explode the Code to shore up the phonics that they need to get them to where you think they should be. If you grab any Explode the Code book the back tells you what each Explode the Code level covers so when that day comes you can grab the level you need. 1 Quote
Shraddha Posted May 2 Posted May 2 We use CLE Language Arts and Math. The CLE website has the scope and sequence for each grade level of each subject on their website. It will tell you what concepts are introduced in each lite unit, so you can compare to Explode the Code. I'm not familiar with Explode the Code. CLE is very thorough, particularly with grammar. It also covers spelling, penmanship and creative writing. I personally like to simplify and stick to one thing. Supplementing is confusing for me, and i feel it's beneficial to do less and do it well. A lot of people seem to supplement the writing because it's light (one writing assignment per lite unit, starting in 2nd). You're encouraged to also add in other writing assignments that are suggested in their book, "On Teaching Writing." I understand writing picks up more in upper grades, especially high school, so it's a complete writing program if you decide to stick with it. I feel the focus in younger grades is on good grammar so the child will be able to write well later, as opposed to expecting a lot of composition from a child who still needs to be corrected in simple things like "there" versus "their.". Another thing I like about CLE LA is that it covers common sense things that I might have overlooked otherwise, such as the difference between a glossary, index and table of contents, how to use a dictionary (guide words, diacritical markings, etc.), how to address and set up a letter, and more. I pray you make the best decision for your family. 1 Quote
Servant4Christ Posted May 2 Posted May 2 (edited) I have not used ETC, but I have used all of CLE's curriculum subjects for grades 1 through 4. It is enough for phonics. However, I did not like the spelling or writing components of CLE language arts. Edited May 5 by Servant4Christ Quote
Momof4sweetkids Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I only use ETC on days when I can't sit down next to my kid to help with writing/spelling. To me it feels more like busywork with a little bit of useful practice. I haven't used CLE but it looks more complete. Quote
seemesew Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I've only been able to do small amounts of ETC because it's really dry and repetitive. I'd drop it and see how cle goes without using it! It's okay to drop something and only use cle. Quote
AnneGG Posted May 6 Posted May 6 IMO, CLE’s Language Arts and Reading is plenty for first grade. Have you completed their Learning to Read course? That is where the bulk of the phonics instruction is. There is still some phonics in their 1st grade reading and la, but the LTR is the equivalent of Explode the Code. You will most likely not need ETC during or after LTR. It is very thorough. Quote
