SHP Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I am seeing this in young adults I know as well as in online groups. Smoking cigarettes seems to be becoming more popular. From young adults wanting their wedding pictures to include them smoking, to so many young adults smoking. With all that is known, I just do not get it. 10 Quote
Rosie_0801 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I know an YA who does that and it is because he does not want to be healthy. Quote
Spryte Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I don’t get it either. Some young adults here are very into smoking cigars as well. Quote

When I was a kid back in the 70s/80s, cigars was a status symbol though some display cigars like people display expensive wine. It is like the poorer people would be smoking the cheapest type of Malboro cigarettes, while those with more "fun money" would buy Dunhill cigarettes. Then there were people who roll their own cigarettes because it is cheaper or because they prefer to. Smoking a pipe was seen as more affluent that smoking cigarettes. Quote

Melissa in Australia Posted April 22 Posted April 22 How can they afford it. Here a pack of cigarettes is something like $60 1 Quote
bookbard Posted April 22 Posted April 22 (edited) I think I've read that vaping has increased the number of smokers, in that they get addicted to nicotine and move from vaping to smoking. Smoking has increased for the first time in 25 years in Australia. Around 1 in 10 people smoke or vape. They are going to make it harder to vape in Australia, lots of new rules coming in like making it prescription only and making it illegal to import disposable and recreational vapes - also restricting flavours to 3 only. https://www.quit.org.au/news/new-data-shows-australian-teen-smoking-increasing-for-the-first-time-in-25-years-against-a-backdrop-of-rising-e-cigarette-use Edited April 22 by bookbard 5 Quote
Pawz4me Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I don't know anyone (of any age) who smokes cigarettes. And I live in the heart of tobacco country. 3 Quote

They're pretty expensive here. I know more YAs who vape and use CBD oils in different forms than those who smoke. I'm not even sure I know more than one adult who smokes cigarettes now. Quote

Catwoman Posted April 22 Posted April 22 (edited) I occasionally see someone smoking in public, but I don’t know anyone who smokes or vapes, and my ds24 and his friends are all anti-smoking and anti-vaping. I don’t think any of them would even date someone who smoked or vaped. Edited April 22 by Catwoman 3 Quote
Scarlett Posted April 22 Posted April 22 None of the young adults in my world smokes except for my older step son. My neighbor smokes and it is annoying when that nasty smell makes its way into my yard. Quote

fairfarmhand Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Since I live in one of the top tobacco producing counties in the country, it never really went away here. There’s always been a segment of this area that has smoked and among the lower income people it happens in all age ranges. I do see 20-30 year olds in middle and upper middle income families smoking cigars more. And vaping is huge among all income levels with young people. Quote
KungFuPanda Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I don’t remember the last time I saw someone smoking and I’m in a very populated area. 1 Quote
BusyMom5 Posted April 23 Posted April 23 All the younger people I see are vaping. My college kids have also mentioned people vaping everywhere- including sneaking it in class, hallways- last week one was in a private study session- 4 kids- and one started vaping in the very small study room. Both find it annoying and kind of alarming how many are vaping and how often they must do it- not even able to go through class without taking a puff. Quote
catz Posted April 23 Posted April 23 I so rarely see people smoke or vape, I do a double take when I do. We are in a populated urban area. I'm sure I'm not hanging out in the right circles lol. My young adult's freinds definitely don't either. And they are in 2 different cities from us. 1 Quote
Lecka Posted April 23 Posted April 23 My son has close friends who vape. My daughter does not, but she says she sees a lot of other kids vaping. I do see people vaping, in parking lots and sitting in cars in parking lots. It does depend on the store. Quote
