mmasc Posted April 21 Posted April 21 You all are so good at this stuff! If the master BR has WHITE walls, my wood bed/tables/chest is a CREAM color, and sheets are WHITE, which duvet color should I choose? Tannish linen? Cornflower? Sea Glass? Sage? Those are my top contenders. More info—I like very soft, muted colors like blues/greens/whites, etc. Think cottage-y. I don’t want it to look dated/old bc the house is already kind of dated/old so I’m trying to make the master BR as fresh and relaxing as possible! I’m thinking these curtains. Any input or thoughts? Bed: (note that will NOT be the wall color behind the bed. Walls will be white) Quote
Ottakee Posted April 21 Posted April 21 I am NOT a designer or decorator at all but I love a soft sage as I find it so calming. 4 1 Quote
Corraleno Posted April 21 Posted April 21 I'd go with either cornflower or sage, depending on which of those coordinates best with your accessories (artwork, throw pillows, lamps, etc). If you don't already have a lot of accessories, or are planning to add new ones as part of the bedroom refresh, then I would be tempted to order both the cornflower and sage, and then go look at Target, Home Goods, etc., for coordinating pillows, art, candles. etc., and then keep the duvet set that you can find the best accessories for and return the other one. 2 Quote
Indigo Blue Posted April 21 Posted April 21 My vote is for tannish linen with a few select pieces that add color, but not too much. 1 Quote

This is a good idea! I don’t have accessories that I’ll be matching. Other than knowing I must have my white sheets and this furniture! So I could go with whatever. Quote

I suspect that the blue will be easier to find coordinating accessories for, because I think varied shades of blue tend to "go together" better than varied shades of green (mixing yellow-green and blue-green can look "off" IMO). Also, stores tend to carry a lot of blue & white home goods in the summer, so you should have a lot of inexpensive options at Target, Home Goods, Walmart, etc. Since the duvet and curtains are solid color, throw pillows in coordinating prints, a paterned throw, inexpensive art on the walls, a coordinating lamp or lampshade, even some candles or little items like a decorative box or tray, small vase, etc., can go a long way to pull a look together. 2 1 Quote
SHP Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Here is my take: I am an adult. I have a job. I pay my taxes. Life is too short. I use a rainbow dragon shower curtain for my curtains. I have regular curtains on the window side for light blocking and to protect my dragon's colors. They are of course different color curtains. I am finally turning an adultlings old room into a guest room and am looking at a galaxy duvet and a tie dye duvet. I am torn, I want both. The sheets will, of course, be bright colors that match. I am also anti-white walls, but that is only after being a parent and scrubbing finger and foot prints off of walls and ceilings. Yes, footprints on the ceiling. No, I didn't ask. My very formal southern aunt is of the view that all morally upstanding white people must follow HGTV trends. Do you have any idea how much fun it is to have her visit? 1 6 Quote
mmasc Posted April 22 Author Posted April 22 @SHP It’s funny you said that, bc I was thinking about this later and how some people adore color and bold, bright walls and linens and paint, etc and how some are like nope lol. I’m definitely a nope. As a matter of fact, color makes me anxious. Which probably sounds weird. I’m definitely not trying to be hgtv, I’m trying to be calm and relaxed so I can sleep. 😅 1 Quote
mmasc Posted April 22 Author Posted April 22 Examples Me—calm: Me—anxious You all can feel free to chime in on this stuff! I don’t mind some derailing from duvet color choices, as long as the derailing is nice.😏 1 Quote

I am always up for talking about color as long as the discussion will not lead to me painting walls. On your calm colors I really like the two with the yellow stars. Maybe because they are a bit darker? I am not really sure. I numbered some of the colors that to me look very very similar. What makes the anxious ones different than the calm ones? I put an X over the colors that are most likely to make me sick to give you and idea of my color triggers. 1 Quote
mmasc Posted April 22 Author Posted April 22 I think those are just “palettes” of colors that go together—so you’re correct, some of the ones in both are likely to be the same (or similar at least). I just prefer all of my colors to be light or muted. And that’s interesting about migraines—I had no idea color could do that! Bummer though. 1 Quote
Carol in Cal. Posted April 22 Posted April 22 I love the duvet covers from Rough Linen. I’d consider any of their weights, in Fog, Storm, Ivory, or if you want to tilt toward color, Aqua. 1 Quote

Is part of the calming that you need an absence of patterns as well as colors? I noticed that your options are all plain. I would decide what the most colorful/patterned thing in the room is going to be and work backwards from there to your calming linens, curtains, etc. since everything goes with white walls. If you have multi-colored artwork or something with a pattern to it even if it’s just mixed tones of the same color, I would make stuff go around that object. If you are using solid colors everywhere, I would look for textured curtains or textured items for the bed. I have trouble matching plain with plain, so having something that adds color or texture or pattern sparks inspiration for me regardless of whether it’s loud or muted, neutral or a predetermined set of limited colors. 1 Quote
mmasc Posted April 22 Author Posted April 22 @kbutton Yes to texture! I like things with texture. FWIW, my current bedding is not solid—so doing solids is new for me. I’ll get some color and patterns in whatever artwork I choose. And maaaaybe my throw pillows, possibly my throw blanket. 1 Quote
