Fellow cabin fever homies, how're you doing?

Recommended Posts

"Help, help!" cried Piglet. I'm sliding into comfortably numb stage. Christmas Eve was nice, despite the lack of church service. Christmas Day was all right, until it suddenly struck me how alone I felt. (Alone, but not alone, since the kids are cooped up with me.) Last night I had such an urge to play a rousing game of Scrabble with my mother ~ or even just listen to the drone of my dad's television as he watches football. Anything! Good grief. I know I'm losing it when I want to be exposed to my dear dad's television habits.:tongue_smilie:

I'm considering rereading The Children's Blizzard, watching Into the Wild again, while I sit here wasting away. Okay, okay, I'm being melodramatic. But it's interesting, just how diminished I'm feeling on a daily basis. I went from running 35 miles a week to a state of inertia. From preparing for Christmas concerts and mingling with friends to getting excited when a non-farm related vehicle drives by. I'm phenomenally tired and have had a dull headache for a solid week now brought on by doing absolutely nothing. And while the effort seems monumental, I should take a shower again some day...shouldn't I?

And you?

We feel downright jolly since the power returned :tongue_smilie: 38 1/4 hours of dark and cold made us a wee bit whiny. I got such a thrill watching the PGE truck with its golden worklights wend its way up and down the road shining its spotlights into the trees looking for the short. The sleet and snow falling through looked golden and ever so pretty. Then, the lights came back on!! toilets flushed! the heater ran!! the dishes were washed! laundry dried! and there was light to read by!! and my heating pad, sigh, Christmas Eve doesn't get better than this :) Hang in there, spring is only 3 months away :D

That's understandable! We do have a generator, for farm purposes, and a wood stove, so that's nice. We've not been without power, though. I know that's been a problem for a lot of people this season and I feel for all of you!

We have a fireplace downstairs with an insert. We all huddle around it. Of course, the fan doesn't work without power. Dh would love to buy a generator, but it never seems to be in the budget. Thankfully, we don't lose power very often, but when we do the well won't pump and with 8 of us still at home that is usually the biggest "crisis." We are pretty good at improvising. We had prepared with buckets of water in the bathtub ahead "just in case." The animals need warm water twice a day in the barn and they had to be content with house temp(chilly). We bbq'd in the snow for Christmas Eve lunch :) I just don't know how people do it for much longer and keep their sense of humor. We've got headcolds and sniffles, ick ick. The funny thing is, I know the kids will never forget all the snow and their memories will be clear of this White Christmas. We were without power for nearly 5 days after a windstorm in December 1995 and the older kids remember it fondly. The trials seem to bring us together :grouphug: (to keep warmer?)

Still have not gone anywhere but I can deal with that since I am happy we finally had trash service today! The trash has not been picked up in 2 weeks. It's the little things! We don't have much trash but the trash cans are under feet of snow(doh!) so we have been having to stash it around the house.

We will get out on Sunday for Christmas with DH's family.

I know what you mean, our trash should get picked up tomorrow! I don't drive in snow at all and we won't be venturing out for a few more days. Dh's work truck has chains, but he can only take one passenger if he rearranges all his work junk. He keeps us well supplied with food. He ventured out for cooked chickens and Chinese on Christmas Eve when the power was still out. We enjoyed a different sort of candlelight dinner.

Ok, so no trash service this week, haven't been to church in two weeks and made family plans for this week. I can't remember the last time I missed 3 church services in a row! But, we never lost power managed to have enough food even though I didn't stock up. (It NEVER snows in the Willamette Valley.:tongue_smilie:) So I really can't complain. I am missing all the canceled plans though and yes a sense of complete lethargy has almost taken over.

Day after Christmas: I finally got out today with the family after being cooped up inside for many days! It was wonderful to breathe fresh air, and I didn't even mind the traffic in town, since at least it moved now and then and there were people in the vehicles! ;) Yes, we actually went out today.....mainly because we could! The kids got gift cards for B&N and Target, so we just went those two places. It was packed in town, so it would've taken hours to go to Costco, I'm sure. Maybe next week. Everybody seemed in good spirits though---probably cuz EVERYone had been cooped up inside for days! :)

We've had snow covering our roads for 1 1/2 weeks, and the snow plow came by last night---on Christmas Day! My dh said, "Why'd they come today? It's Christmas! We've waited this long, we could've waited one more day!" :D But it DID help us be able to get out today, so I'm happy they were willing to get out and do that for their fellow stuck humans! :D

Oh...trash.....well, they didn't come get it this week. They're going to be totally backed up by next week, so we are trying to be careful to put only food items in the trash can and paper items and things will go in large garbage bags for whenever they do manage to get here to pick up our trash!

Hey, I remember that storm in '95. Somehow we didn't lose our power for more than 13 hours, which was handleable. So our house became THE place to be. We had numerous people come over to shower and get warmed up! It was kind of fun actually! :)

I know it doesn't make it better for you to hear this, but I'd love to have just a sprinkling of snow so I could have remembered that it is Christmas season, after all!!!

We stood outside with our neighbors Christmas day watching the kids play with their outside toys, and after a short time, we had to go inside simply because it was BLAZING hot! Then, as I'm going inside, a lizard jumps on my leg and does circles, round and round, up and down. I screamed bloody murder feeling that nasty thing racing around my thigh. I'd have rather fallen headlong into a snowdrift!

Anyway, hugs to you and wishes that you'll soon be up and running again. I know how yuck it feels when one's exercise regime gets sidetracked.

Blessings,

I'm sorry y'all are all cooped up. My poor niece in New Hampshire went 12 days without power in an all electric house. Fortunately they had a woodstove. Also, when the neighbor heard that her two babies had the flu, he let them use his generator for a couple of the days. Can you imagine cleaning up after the flu in those circumstances?

She was interviewed on the local news as they were one of the last houses to have power restored in NH.

Anyway, after hearing her regale us with her stories, it made me really feel for those of you who are suffering from cabin fever, living without power, etc. Take care of yourself and I'm thinking of you!

 Lizards!

I grew up in southern California and our Christmas traditions included the Balboa Island boat light parade and Christmas Day walks on the beach...sometimes even a brief swim!! White Christmases were not on the menu. Now, I can't even imagine a Nativity scene in our little barn with the animals all cooped up for the last two weeks...ewww. After all, Bethlehem wasn't snowed in, the skies were clear and the night warm enough for sheep and shepherds to be greeted by angels. This year our White Christmas is more Currier & Ives, Hollywood, or Little House on the Prairie. I guess that we build our memories wherever we are. I am thankful that there are no sneaky lizards to worry about!

Well it has not been the snow that has been keeping us in (there's plenty of that) but the cold. With temps in the single digits and teens we don't even feel like going out to build a snowman. It's snowing now, and snow is forecast every single day for as long as the forecast goes. I am hoping it will warm up a few degrees so we can enjoy it.

What's more, roads are closing all around us. My husband just called and I hope the roads stay open so he can come home today at all. Lots of blowing and drifting snow all around. Every little town around here has its own microclimate and experiences its own version of winter. Such is life in the mountains.
