lynn
It's about 30degrees here and ds friend comes over w/o shoes or coat. It's not a situation of not having money, he just didn't care to put on coat and shoes:001_huh:. Then when the boys wanted to go to friends house I had to catch them before they both ran out the door w/o coat and shoes. I made them both wear a coat and offered to get ds friend shoes and before I could get him some they ran out the door. Geesh. What to do with these kids. chaik76
 I know people like this! I think there might have even been another thread on here sometime in the past few months...we don't really care. I usually make ds carry a coat in the car, but I don't make him wear it, and we go outside in bare feet all the time, even in winter. Jean in Newcastle
My dd went out in the snow in her swimsuit once. I thought she'd come right in when she realized how cold it was but no! I had to go out and practically drag her in!
Cedarmom
Last weekend it was snowing and my teenage son had friends over. Three over them came over in shorts!

There is one family of children who never seems to be able to dress appropriately for the weather. Once a child arrived to go sledding with my children while wearing shorts. Then a few months later they show up wearing winter coats in July. So I did what any nomal person would do and complained about them over the internet
fivetails
Might be the "cool" factor - and I don't mean the temperature. ;) I remember being about 15 and walking around in mid-winter (in the snow) wearing a short skirt & jean jacket...I was totally frozen, but that didn't matter cuz I looked cool. Yep yep. :tongue_smilie:
Tracy in Ky
My ds is this way--we have to force him to put on a coat and remove the shorts!! It's crazy. He is 14--maybe it is an age thing? He kept asking, "Why?" After explaining more than once why we wear pants and coats when it is winter, I finally told him that since he is not capable at this point of choosing appropriate clothing to wear, then we will choose for him and there is no discussion about it. I really don't get it. Last night, we left some friends' house. The temperature and windchill were ferocious--just the actual temp was probably in the teens, the there was a strong wind blowing!! He gets into the van and removes his coat (I had already told him to wear his coat to the van), but all he had on under it was a short-sleeved silky NYLON shirt!! At that point I just let it go lol. Is it a male dominance thing? "I am tougher than the weather" ??? He's a great kid. Just wacky sometimes! ha ha
FriedClams
I have a kid oblivious to cold. He'll be skiing in shorts someday. I make him carry a jacket, but often it gets stuck in the car (and then we'll have 2 or 3 since they get carried and left there, UGH!!). unsinkable
Perhaps some kids truly aren't cold? My dh always wore shorts in the winter when he was younger (20s-30s) and he lived to tell the tale. Neither of us ever wore socks. My boys & girl are the same. I also know boys where wear no clothes under there hockey equipment. They just get too hot. I can't imagine anyone telling them to put a shirt on under their pads. To me, being overheated is torture and I wouldn't force it on anyone else. My son was wearing shorts & flip-flops in the late fall to a hockey game and a mom stopped him and told him that he was lucky he wasn't her kid b/c he wouldn't be allowed to leave the house that way. I just thought, "You're right. He is lucky that I respect him & believe him when he says he is hot."
Tracy in Ky
Yes, forcing a child to be overheated is bad. I would not do that to my children, and have always been careful not to do that to them. But asking a child to put on a coat when he is in short sleeves, and the temperature may be around 14 or so, is not overheating him, and he is certainly not hot. It is a matter of common sense and teaching a child to make wise decisions. :)

I think I am looking at it differently & I don't know your situation. But when my kids are hot, they are hot, no matter what the temp. We have outdoor thermometers and we live for the weather channel. My kids check the temp & wind chill and make their decisions based on what they are going to do. If they are going to play in the snow, they dress differently than if they are going to go somewhere in the car. All 3 of them learned how to keep themselves safe in the weather. Their choices might not be my choices but they do use common sense & make wise decisions.

I guess that is part of being a parent--stepping in until they can decide for themselves. And I agree with you about letting them wear less when they are truly hot. My dd gets very hot. Ds though--I think he mainly wants to be 'tough' sometimes. And sometimes I let him express his toughness, and sometimes I don't. Thanks for your comments--I think I'll be more careful to make sure he isn't truly hot (though short sleeves when the temps are in the teens?! The only time that makes sense is for a menopausal woman :D ha ha) Blessings and hugs, Tracy
