Beth in SW WA
She's such a cutie! I had never heard/seen her speak before. She's great! The link to her lecture is on her blog. I nominate her for a "live" video lecture WEEKLY on a homeschooling/self-educating topic of her choosing. I could settle for monthly. She has time... :) LOL EDIT: Here is the direct link to the lecture at Princeton Univ Press. PinkInTheBlue
You can't post this without a link. I think it's board rules. ;) I require a link!

Guest Lorna
Thanks Beth! I was so excited when Susan Wise Bauer came over to the UK recently to talk about 'The Art of the Public Grovel'. I was ironing my husband's shirts to 'Woman's Hour' on the radio and who should come on to spice up my day but Professor SWB herself. It was so cool to hear the voice of someone I have read so much. I was strangely surprised she had an American accent (I read her books in my head with my own Scottish accent of course). In fact I am guessing most of you don't have Scottish accents either. :tongue_smilie: Edited December 22, 2008 by Lorna
Beth in SW WA
Too funny, Lorna. No Scottish accent here in my part of the US either. But I do love Irish/Scottish/British anything. I'm partial. I've got strong, fiery Irish blood flowin' in my veins. I watched her whole lecture. Fascinating. I'm still trying to pin-point her political persuasion. The lecture didn't give it away! Rats! :) I need a channel called "All SWB -- All the time!" I'm reading TWEM, HOAW & I just watched her lecture. A proud groupie, is what I am. Jill- OK
Fascinating. I'm still trying to pin-point her political persuasion. The lecture didn't give it away! Rats! :) ...after years of reading SWB, and seeing her responses to various things, here, and elsewhere, that she keeps her political beliefs pretty close to the vest. Just another reason to like her. :D
Jill- OK
...the video won't play for me! I'll keep trying. But I remember the first time I heard SWB's voice, on a tape I purchased from Peace Hill; I was shocked that she sounded so young and chipper! I was expecting a voice like the diction coach in Singin' In The Rain, lol. ("Rrround tooones...") Funny what a word like "classical" puts in a person's mind, huh? :D
LBC
Thanks for the link. I just finished watching it. Very thought provoking. I heard SWB speak at BC CHEC in 2006. She was great! I even have a picture of a few WTM boarders with her at the conference. I'll try to attach it. I'm the short blond next to SWB, and Sarah CB is the one with glasses. The tall, dark haired girl is SA Canada, but I haven't seen her on the boards for a long time. Lori I think the picture is a bit large. Sorry about that! ETA: I deleted the picture. It had our first and last names on our name tags, and someone was thoughtful enough to pm me to help keep things safe. Edited December 21, 2008 by LBC 2006 not 2007 for the convention year. I saw this lecture in person. :w00t: She was great and very interesting. Funny, I never thought her political persuasion would be anything but conservative! Thinking about it now, you are right - she never comments one way or another on any political or social issues and now I'm wondering what her political persuasion is! :D

I read a review of an A.A. Milne audiobook in which the narrator was criticized for being too old (disrespectfully called a 110 yr old geezer), and too British sounding-not enough like the Disney characters. The audiobook is a direct narration of four unabridged A.A. Milne classics, read by a narrator(Peter Dennis) authorized by Christopher Robin personally. I guess if your kids are used to hearing Disney's Winnie the Pooh, they might prefer a younger narrator, but too British? How dare anyone do AA Milne in a British voice?! What will the Brits take over next with their hoity-toity voices-The King James Bible??? God Bless America!:gnorsi:
Jenny in Atl
I watched her whole lecture. Fascinating. I'm still trying to pin-point her political persuasion. The lecture didn't give it away! Rats! :) I thought the comment about folks from the Princeton area possibly not feeling as helpless as folks from the south (Virginia) about the upcoming election was very telling. Thanks for posting. It was an interesting lecture.

nmoira
I thought the comment about folks from the Princeton area possibly not feeling as helpless as folks from the south (Virginia) about the upcoming election was very telling.Prior to the release of this book, I was not aware she had attended Liberty University (not that I'd actively searched out her background). It's glossed over in this blurb from her bio: Susan's parents taught her at home for most of elementary and middle school, and all of high school; she entered college at seventeen as a Presidential Scholar and National Merit finalist, and finished her B.A. in five semesters with a major in English, a minor in Greek and a summer spent studying twentieth century theology as a Visiting Student at Oxford. She went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia...

Maybe I am wrong though. That was my sense as well, but I was a bit surprised nonetheless. Any musing of her currentpolitical leanings would be purely speculation on my part, and it is not a point on which I care to dwell because of that. :)
