Dark Chocolate

Recommended Posts

I'm a Belgian chocolate snob. (but I lived there for a time so its understandable. ;))

I shop at Central Market and World Market to find Cote D'Or brand. We get the 70 percent cocoa because we love the richness. Mignionettes are small pieces of either milk or dark chocolate that are good for guests.

I keep a small stash in the fridge but allow it to come to room temperature before snarfing it down. :D

Two weeks ago I wouldn't have had an answer to this question but today I can tell you that I love Ghiradelli (not sure I'm spelling it correctly) chocolate. Someone gave me a bag of their "filled" dark chocolates for my birthday last week. Some were filled with creamy mint, others were raspberry and some were caramel. They were all awesome. They are little flat squares. I have seem them everywhere - today I saw them at Michaels craft store (sold individually), Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Borders books.

Yum!!

What is YOUR favorite? and where do you buy it?

The best dark chocolate I've ever eaten is created by Theo Chocolate, the only organic, fair-trade chocolate factory in the United States. Conveniently for me, it's located in Seattle so the product is available here at natural foods markets, like my co-op. It is absolutely exquisite and makes a divine gift ~ when I don't eat it before gifting.;) (As an aside, people who claim very dark chocolate can only be consumed in small portions are wrong. Ask me how I know.:))

You can visit Theo at http://www.theochocolate.com/. The product is top notch, yes. But in addition, it's such a joy to be able to support sustainable agriculture and fair trade practices while enjoying fine quality chocolate. I love this company! I've met a number of their employees and it would be an awesome place to work. I haven't yet toured their factory, but I plan to do that soon with my boys.:)

Yippee! I used to buy Cote d'Or in Caracas and I had no idea you could get it in Texas. I'm going to have to scour my local HEBs and see if they have it, because out in suburbia we aren't sophisticated enough for a real Central Market :D.

Yes- my mouth did indeed water as I LOVE chocolate!

Thank so much-

I will "hunt."

I have generally gotten Dove Dark and Sharffenberger- but was looking for something "fresh."

My absolute favourite is the Earl Grey dark chocolate Rococo bar. I first had it in Paris but you can buy it in a little chocolate shop in Knightsbridge, London. The supermarket 'Waitrose' do a cardamon version which is wonderful too.

My favourite middle of the range dark chocolate is made in England by a company called Montezuma. It is naturally flavoured with orange and geranium and tastes very delicate and special. I buy this in wholefood shops in England.

My favourite cheap dark chocolate is 'Divine', a very smooth dark fair-trade chocolate with a slight burnt caramel taste. I think it is amazing value. I can buy this in most supermarkets here in England.

All three bars are so rich and special tasting that I don't eat too much at once!

I am a chocolate head. Years ago, I remember liking Hershey's Special Dark, then Dove, and eventually, Ghiradhelli Dark Chocolate Chips (which used real vanilla not vanillin). Now, those types are only eaten in dire emergencies. The bar I choose most often is Lindt 85% (they also make a 70% which is a tad sweeter, so preferable to some). I discovered just this week that these are sold at Target for considerably less than I pay at my local grocery store. I am, apparently, willing to let all my convictions fall to the wayside in the case of chocolate, for the Lindt bar is neither fair trade nor organic. Sadly, what compels me is that I can actually afford it. I pay around $2.75/bar (but the Target price was $2.12). I eat 2-3 squares of it a day, so one bar lasts me less than a week. By comparison, the Endangered Species bar is a dollar more, and the Theo bar (which is not easy for me to locate here), recommended by Colleen, is closer to $5.00/bar. Same with Scharffenberger and Dagoba. I just can't allow myself that much indulgence. I might then have to give up my cheap wine!

Amazing how "scientific" I am about all this, huh?

Any of the options mentioned in this thread are worthy of a taste test. I'm sure you'll find more than one you love and Dove will suddenly seem terribly uninteresting. ;)
