The dream home game

Wow, i was adoring the guest house, and then realized I might be looking at the pool house or maybe the garden shed. 😄 I hope your side of the mountain faces civilization so you can get cell coverage for your grocery delivery order. The price jumped slightly in the past 2 years ($5 million +)!

It's so funny how these things can differ. My dream home would be totally redone on the edge of the park but still walkable to the subway. It would be totally rewired and not falling apart. So, like, walking distance from here, lol. Clearly I'm not dreaming big enough.

My dream house isn't glamorous or massive. I think we actually purchased it last summer.

The criteria was:

No harsh winters

Three growing seasons or extra long growing season

2 acres

Mature trees and shade, but plenty of sunny spots also for gardening

Tree for tree house, possible place to keep backyard hens

Quiet

Rural for the quiet, but close to a good size city with excellent health care available so not more than 45 minutes away

Large enough to accommodate us and our adult children, mothers, and grand children if the economy demanded, and with enough bedrooms and bathrooms that everyone has a private space to go to

Not so unique or weird or trendy that resale value would be impacted

Ability to accommodate solar power

Has a view, a bit of shangra la as they say because the shut down convinced us that as much as we want to travel, having home be a refuge is good

Handicap accessibility

We found that house and in our price range last summer and purchased it.

My main regret now is that it is in Alabama with its trigger ban, and crazy anti-woman legislative body. My only hope is maybe that will change in the future because we are stuck with this place for a while.

So onward an upward. Planting more fruit trees this fall.

I love it!  In my head, I have various dream homes, none of which is an actual probability.

One would be something like the above, only with the houses closer together, so all my kids could come and visit and the kids could run back and forth between the houses. But the maintenance on that one, along with the property? I don't think so. Of course, if we are dreaming, we can also dream that we are rich enough to handle hiring someone to take care of that part... Along this line is something like where I grew up--a lake house on 2-3 acres with lots of room for kids to run around and enjoy swimming in the summer, bonfires in the winter, and plenty of reading nooks.

Then there is the small town one, with a cottage-type or Craftsman-type house with a big porch and within walking distance of everything (and walkable sidewalks/roads, as well). Maybe a ⅓ acre lot. It would have the well-stocked library and the coffee shop right down the street, as well as a well-stocked but easily manageable/affordable grocery store. I would pull my Radio Flyer wagon to the store to bring my groceries home in. It would also have the perfect church (which doesn't exist, of course). And maybe would be close enough to a city so I could go to the occasional play or concert, and have access to good restaurants.

Then there is the easily maintained apartment, condo, or brownstone in the city, where I can take public transportation everywhere. My belongings have to be minimal, but it is still cozy. I can enjoy the museums, the ethnic diversity, and occasionally rent a car and go to the mountains when I want the peace and quiet.

Interestingly, in my lifetime, I have lived in a variety of places from quite rural to a city of 15 million +. I had always thought of myself as a more rural girl, since that is how I grew up. But I enjoyed aspects of each of the places we lived, including the city, so I feel like I could manage the lifestyle in any of the above scenarios. I also enjoy different styles of houses. Probably my "heart" house is cabin style, but my friend has a mid-century modern home that I just love. I really do enjoy rural and small towns, but with an educated populace and real thinkers. (Educated doesn't have to mean multiple degrees--more of the mindset of people who read and are not "ingrown" in their thinking.) One of our homes overseas was in a small town and had so much that I enjoyed, including walkability. But the church situation was so so hard. Since that is a big part of my life, it colored everything else.

I'm in my dream house right now. 5 bedroom(1 being 1st floor master), 4 bath, 2 large and separate living areas, large kitchen, bonus room, and a dining room that is used daily. Yard is an acre with most of that being back yard. Situated in a nice neighborhood with lots of kids and close to town.

Ideally, I'd have a second home that I could rent out in the woods near a lake and beautiful scenery.

My current dream home would be something small and super easy to maintain with a superb floor plan in a mountain setting similar to the one in Elizabeth's first post. It would have excellent internet and cell service and while feeling secluded would also be reasonably close to all sorts of necessities, particularly a good grocery store, pharmacy and medical care.

So - somewhere in Utah or Colorado?

We have friends who built their dream home in the mountains.   Internet comes in via satellite.   1ds and 2ds went to visit them - and woe to the slow internet service. . . .

Nope, not for me. Both are beautiful states but the Appalachians, especially the Blue Ridge, own my heart. Their ancientness appeals to me in a way that the younger western mountains don't.

Me too! These mountains feel like home. Maybe not as “majestic” or whatever, but they feel like home.

ah - growing up on the west coast with mountains with a lot of prominence (e.g. sea-level to Rainier), to me the Appalachians are foothills.

I have  driven through them a time or two but I hope to spend some time there someday.  Have you ever seen the Ouachitas?

This house is too big, but the property is my dream, so I guess I’d just buy a lot of robot vac/mops.
We don’t want to move out of our township, so it isn’t the REAL dream, but it’s a fair representation!

I’m so shocked at how many of you would choose a city 😂😂. I would hightail it as far away from the city as I could. @Elizabeth86’s house is amazing if we’re talking dream dream, like suddenly had a ton of money dream. If we landed a lot of money, there is no way you’d get me to live in a city. Also why are y’all fixated on price and affordability? When someone says “this is what I’d buy if I was a billionaire and could buy anything” then that means the dream is that price doesn’t matter 😂

I hate that I can't see the dream house she posted. It has a cave?

Maybe she can post again. The 329 acres was beside a mountain and surrounded by a lot of national forests. The land is amazing. I sent to my girls and they want to know why anyone would sell it 😂

I often wonder what these homeowners/realtors think when all of a sudden they start getting lots of hits on their house. Do they get all excited because they think that the new traffic means something? Do they realize we are all just dreaming? Are we giving them false hope?😄 I guess all traffic is good traffic, though, because it might bring that one multi-millionaire who has this dream!

Medical care and international airport. I would want at least one hospital with level 4 NICU. Born a preemie and my twin died when a few days old of cardiac and pulmonary failure. I also appreciate having many choices of specialists within a 20mile drive for myself. The airports are great when needing to fly to Asia for business trips and visiting relatives.
