Peela
Can you tell me about it? Someone on another thread mentioned that ipod touch can download and read kindle and other ebooks. Suddenly I am thinking, thats what I want for Christmas, now I know! But I am thinking, surely the ipod touch has too small a screen to really enjoy reading from? How big are the others? What other choices do I have? I would like to be able to download and read ebooks, but I am interested in other functions too. thanks
Cherrie
A Sony they also have one that is touch screen like the iPod phone. I don't think they do anything other than store your documents and photos. There is no way I could read very long off the Iphone or one of the other mp3 players. My husband has one that plays movies and I can't be bothered it is to small. Plus the screens on these e-readers are easier on the eyes. It was a little heavier than I hoped. It would be wonderful if you could download teacher manuals, lesson plans, schedules and so on. http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1005164&navigationPath=n46881n100431
fshinkevich
I do NOT have a kindle, so you are not getting a first hand experience, however my DH's boss purchased one and did not like it at all, there were a lot of flaws he complained about. However he purchased it when it FIRST came out so improvements may have been made since then (also the price has dropped a lot). Also I know there are a lot of people that LOVE it and if you go to Amazon there is a Kindle forum with more information than you could ever hope to know about it. http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Device/forum/FxBVKST06PWP9B/-/1/ref=cm_cd_t_h_dp_t?_encoding=UTF8&cdItems=25&asin=B000FI73MA&store=fiona-hardware http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum I really wanted one but two things have stopped me from purchasing it so far, both having to do with the price. I LOVE, LOVE reading in the bathtub and I would not want to expose a $300 book to moisture or risk of dropping in bubble water :D And on that same note, I lose stuff all the time and I would be kicking myself forever if I left it at the Drs or something. So just twi silly things to keep in mind. If you decide to get one, I would love your opinion on it.
TraceyS/FL
OK, i just found out that eReader used to be Peanut press - and hey, i just logged in!!!! So i've read 17 novels on my Clie (palm) in the past.... Anyway, i had a whole other post and the computer froze. Kindle isn't an option for you right now unless you have it sent to someone in the US first. Be sure to check out the movie/demo of Stanza to help see what you can do with it. lexcycle.com/movie I'm excited for you either way!! OHHH, the bathtub.... I had typed that since my current tub is so shallow, and i'm, um, NOT, even if it fell in the tub - it'd hit ME not hte water! LOL!!! Janet in Toronto
I have an iPod touch with a book reader app on it. I only use the book reader when I am stuck somewhere without a real book. The screen on the touch is too small for an enjoyable reading experience. I love the Touch for lots of other stuff though! I think I'd lurve the Kindle, but right now the service is limited to the US, *sniff*, definitely because of the wireless connection for downloading stuff, but also possibly due to digital rights issues on the content (not sure about that last one). From what I've read, the Kindle is head and shoulders above any other ebook reader out there in terms of interface and functionality. From what I've seen, the Kindle is bigger than a mass market paperback book, but very thin. If they are ever available in Canada, I'll be first in line! Janet in Toronto
Kindle isn't an option for you right now unless you have it sent to someone in the US first. You need a credit card with US address to purchase the device, and then a US credit card to purchase content. And the wireless functionality doesn't work outside the US. So it's pretty much a write-off for any of us outside the purview of the amazon mothership.

The screen on the touch is too small for an enjoyable reading experience. I love the Touch for lots of other stuff though! This is where you kinda have to try it... The Touch/iPhone screen is bigger and better than any Palm one i have had, and it truly didn't bother me at all. In the other thread i mentioned i could snuggle up in the covers and read - no cold arms from turning pages. Great for middle of the night reading too, i don't like turning on even my nightlight. Once it's "light", i'm done for in the sleep department. And for me - heck, it's a book i don't have to dust or keep track of! LOL!! But i think each person should TRY IT first, it may or may not work for you. I'm downloading a eReader.com book i never read but had bought. Cool! :tongue_smilie:
SFP
If you want to read a Kindle in the bathtub, all you have to do is put it inside a ziplock bag. Kindles are backordered right now. I wrote about my Kindle here.
Deidre in GA
i don't have a Kindle or an iPhone/iTouch but i can say that reading eBooks on my Palm TX has been a revelation. my gut feeling was that reading on such a small device would be painful. much to my surprise, when i actually tried it, it was fine and very convenient. my son has a tendency to fake reading through meaty books and when this happens i make him read the book to me. this was necessary with The Scarlet Letter and Moby Dick both of which i read along on eBook as he read from a paperback. (the trickster would skip passages if i wasn't monitoring!) that's how i came to discover eBooks. since then i've read a few on my own; it's very portable and, like the Kindle, very handy to have ready/quick access to a dictionary. all that is to say, don't rule out the iPhone type options. prefs vary but you may find it suits you. Jan in SC
I love my Kindle. I take it everywhere! I also put kids books on it, so if we get stuck somewhere I can hand it off or read aloud.

I wondered about this too, but found that I also *love* reading books on my Palm. I can have 6 books going at once if I want to, in a teeny-tiny size (about the size of a cassette tape, I think) that fits in my purse or even in my pocket. I don't get stuck in a waiting room without a book. To top that off, it's also my organizer/calendar, mp3 player, photo album, address book, grocery list, and even word processor (I have the little keyboard that flips out to close to full size). I wouldn't discount the idea of reading ebooks on a small screen. Because the screen is backlit, it's pretty easy to read, *and* it's easy to read in the dark (like in bed while dh is sleeping or while travelling at night in a car). WTMCassandra
You know, it's only recently that I downloaded some books for my iPhone, thinking I would not really enjoy reading that way. But it's not so bad, and, I'm NEVER without a book! Woohoo! That's a great feeling. I chose a reader where the text automatically scrolls for you. It takes a couple of minutes to get it scrolling exactly at the right speed, but when it is, I find the reading is actually relaxing. I would highly recommend the iPhone over the iTouch. With the reduced prices, I think the iPhone is a much better value. It does everything except sort your socks! I'm a believer, I've drunk the red kool-aid. Not unless your entire family is on Verizon and AT&T isn't an option for you because your cell use would just astronomically! LOL!! So for the rest of us - we nee the Touch! WTMCassandra
Ohhhh. I didn't really take that into account. We don't have a family network plan going on.
WTMCassandra
I can understand about the money. My husband's work provides a discount that makes the monthly fee about the same as what I was paying before, for a phone without internet. So when Apple cut the initial cost in half and I realized I could have all of that functionality for about the price of just a phone, we went for it when my other cell plan expired. Plus, I had an ancient PDA that was about to croak, and I needed more functionality than my iPod shuffle.
