sandellie4
Hi all, I know this is off topic but I've never bought a cargo carrier and I need one now for a loooonnng trip to the in-laws -- with three of our kids and three of our dogs. We don't have a van or SUV or anything, just a 2006 Toyota Corolla. All the cargo carriers I am finding require a roof rack. Can I add that? How do I know what to get? I just need something safe and serviceable, as we don't travel often. I'm thinking of this carrier http://www.amazon.com/Highland-10391-Waterproof-Soft-Sided-Carrier/dp/B0002MA8TE/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_img_a and there is something called a "bar carrier" on the same page. Is that the roof rack? Or is that something else that I would need a roof rack for? Do we need the tiedowns, too...? Please help! I need to find one quickly enough to have it arrive by our departure date on the 21st of this month.
Jean in Newcastle
We got a roof rack that attaches to the top of our Corolla. It has rubbery feet to protect the top of the car. Unfortunately I can't tell you the brand. I know that we got it at an outdoor outfitter place called Joe's (don't know if they have them where you are). sandellie4
Thanks! Do you still have this maybe? So, you could perhaps read the brand name or anything? I'm not sure where to start (I've never heard of Joe's...). Sandy
Julie in CA
http://www.roofbag.com/?CPID=1000&kw=roof+carrier Would this work? They advertise that you can "have it tomorrow". I Googled "cargo carrier no roof rack" and lots of stuff popped up. Maybe try that?
Tap
GI Joes, REI, any major outdoor store will sell them. Sportsmans stores as well as winter sports stores. You can go in and research what you need. Write down specific parts info and either buy it there or try Craigslist to get what you need. It doesn't have to be pretty if your only using it on occasion just make sure it fits exactly right so you don't scratch your car or send your luggage flying. Try Thule's or Yakima's websites. They have specific information on what you need for each style of carrier. Good luck Edited December 15, 2008 by Tap, tap, tap
Guest MN_Mind
A rear cargo carrier might also do the job for you. That way you don't need any load bars on the roof of your Toyota. Here's one from THULE that might be worth checking out: http://www.cartopcarriershops.com/TU665CCTCS.html. Hope you have a great trip! JoyfulMama
Check your local rental place to see if they have something you could use, rather than buy.
