dorothy
Hi, I own and will use all the SOTW and also A Little History of the World. Also have the IEW Poetry Memorization program I am looking for all of your favorites in all subject areas. We will be on the road for months and my dc LOVE to learn in the car. Please share your favorite math, science, geography, poetry, history, literature, etc., recordings - they can be pure memory work stuff, songs, stories, whatever. DC will be 12, 9, 6, 4. Thanks. Erica in OR
We've done lots of long car trips and long commutes to piano, etc., and listen to many audio books. One book that stands out is The Cricket in Times Square. The version we heard really added to the read-aloud quality, because it had the music "played" by the cricket as part of the recording. I enjoyed it just as much as the kids. We've also enjoyed Pinocchio, Wizard of Oz, Land of Oz, and dramatized versions of The Chronicles of Narnia books. Our main listeners are 8 and 6 y.o. Kathy in MD
Hi, I own and will use all the SOTW and also A Little History of the World. We like the School House Rock CD for general stuff. For music education, Classical Kids teaches both the music and (usually) biographies of the various composers. Beethovan's Wig (3 CD's available) is good for learning the music, though some people don't like them because they can't forget the funny lyrics that accompany the music on the first half. The second half of each CD is instrumental only. Jim Weiss has a large collection of short stories as well as full length books that would be good for your age group. My favorite of his full length books is Rascal. Odds Bodkin is also a superb story teller, but some of his longer works are difficult to listen to in a noisy car. He varies his volume a lot to keep the listeners' attention. You might also try the "You are There" recordings for history. I'm sorry, but I forget the name of the man who remastered these old radio programs.
texascamps
Your kids are the same age as my own. Our long long trip this time will be accompanied by: SOTW1, Les Miserables (focus on the family ed) Hank the Cowdog, Saddle House Robbery Mystery audio CD ,Clint Black's Christmas music. Muppet Christmas with John Denver, Veggie Tales Christmas, Mormon Tab Choir (so they will sleep a little) and we made up a cd of some RandR music oh and Great Expectations on audio read by Hugh Laurie. In the past, we have very much enjoyed many Hank the Cowdogs, (can't miss comedy) Harry P, THe Frog Princess, Nancy Drew Mysteries. Redwall series, THE BBC version of WInd in the Willows (comedy), Green Shadow White Whale audio (ray Bradbury) and THe James Herriot "All Creatures Great and Small" series. We've rented others from Cracker Barrel but none jumped out as awesome...I guess because I can't remember any titles. But, we have been entertained by some. I'm afraid we will run out of stuff so I'm still looking for some others.
