Shoes+Ships+SealingWax
Does anyone have experience with the WTMA “Math Club for Logic / Rhetoric Stage” classes, Athena’s “Math Club,” or AOPS Academy’s “Middle School / High School Contest Math”? Would you or your child recommend them? I’d really like to find some mathy peers for DS9, who will be wrapping up BA5 & beginning AOPS PreAlgebra next school year. Our nearest Math Circle is restricted to ages 12+ & creating an elementary Math Club for local homeschoolers was a non-starter, so now I’m looking at outsourced options. WTMA Math Club for Logic Stage is recommended for those in Fundamental Mathematics (BA5) through Intro to Algebra. Athena’s states: “Topics include: Basic Algebra, Basic Geometry, Number Theory, Counting and Probability, Problem-solving strategies. The problems will be MATHCOUNTS-level.” The AOPS Academy class states: “Students are introduced to important new topics in counting, probability, and number theory, while reviewing topics in algebra and geometry and applying these concepts to advanced problems.” This sounds like it may be best suited for students who have completed both Intro to Algebra and Intro to Geometry. (Can anyone confirm that?)
desertflower
I really like Athena's Academy. My son is currently in Athena's Math Club. He likes it. The teacher explains the homework problems in class and then assigns videos to watch along with problems to do afterwards. Yes, they are based on MathCounts problems. For $124 a semester, that's not a bad deal.

My son just started this class this semester and he's in algebra. I'm told that BA 5 is like prealgebra, so he may be able to do the math club class in the fall. My son started AoPS Prealgebra and was flying through it, so we changed to algebra that year. You may be able to look at some MathCounts problems and go from there. I would give it a try. It's only 8 weeks and around $62.
