Lady Florida. Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 We downsized in 2020 and while I love my smaller house (attached duplex) there are no common closets. There's a linen closet between the two extra bedrooms but no foyer or hall closets. I need some extra storage and want to add an upper cabinet in the laundry room. I can't find one ready made so we'll either buy one of bare wood or dh will make it. Getting a matching upper from the same company that made our cabinets is way too expensive. The problem is I don't want it to look out of place. I thought I could paint and decorate it so it looks like it's supposed to be different from the lower cabinet. White seems like it would be out of place. The countertop is beige/tan and the walls are slightly off-white. The appliances are white as you can see but I don't think white cabinets would look right. I could be wrong since I'm not good at this kind of thing. We keep the cat box in there as well so shelves or cabinets around the litter box wouldn't be practical. Here are some photos. Any ideas welcome. I'm also thinking of changing the wire shelf above the washer & dryer to something different. Ideas for that are also welcome. It's a top loading washer so it needs to be high enough for that. I also want to have some place to hang shirts as they come out of the dryer. There is an overview of the room and the wall space where I want to add storage. It's 59 inches from the wall to the edge of the countertop. Quote
Dianthus Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 (edited) I would remove shelf and add cabinet the entire length of the room, not just over existing counter. I would try to stain to match. Can buy unfinished if your dh doesn't build. If you take the cabinet door and a piece of the unfinished wood to Sherwin Williams, they will match and custom mix a stain for you. Eta. I ordered doors from Here with good results. Going to order a couple more soon, for a linen cabinet Edited March 30, 2022 by Spirea 1 Quote

This, plus I would put something on the short wall for hanging shirts. 1 Quote

Idalou Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 I would prefer to have stained wood shelves over the washer with a rod underneath for hanging shirts. My question would be- how high would they cabinets be and would the height work all across the wall, including a rod for hanging? Would you need a step ladder or are you tall? Quote
ktgrok Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 You could paint cabinets on bottom to match top ones, or try to get stain to match. For hanging, DH got this for me, and I like it - you can fold it back up when not using it. https://amzn.to/3iPSQgB Quote
