bookbard Posted March 27, 2022 Posted March 27, 2022 My back has started getting quite sore in the last 2 weeks. NB I do a bit of lifting in my job and it has increased a little. It hasn't 'gone' yet, it's not really bad. It just feels like if I'm not careful it could really 'go'. Any ideas? I've been trying to stretch and keep moving. Quote
Miss Tick Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 Lower back or upper back? For lower back sometimes doing some ab crunches helps. It is as though I'm reminding my stomach muscles that they need to do their part! You could try a course of ibuprofen to help keep swelling down, which in turn should help your muscles recover. Lastly, be sure to focus on lifting with your legs, right? For upper back I would say stretching and ibuprofen. What are you lifting? Bars of gold from a recently discovered sunken pirate ship? Blocks of chocolate for sculpting life-sized statues of Dodgers second basemen? Bolts of taffeta for the gazillion weddings happening now? I bet it is cool whatever it is! 1 Quote
Melissa in Australia Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 Some things to try Every time you do any arch forward movement, do an arch backward lie on the floor, bring bent knees up towards your chest and wrap arms around them. Rock gently back and forth walking fast with swinging arms 3 Quote

I'll imagine it's something like that. 3 minutes ago, Melissa in Australia said: Every time you do any arch forward movement, do an arch backward I'll try that as I'm doing lots of bending forward motions. I worked I. Aged care. He said something along the lines of. think of back discs as a soft jelly substance, every time you arch forward you are squishing it back. Arching back pushes it back to centre and greatly reduces back stress. Some other tips he told me are.. if you need to do something like pick something up, rest the other arm on your bent knee. If gardening , either go down on knees or use a pole or tool handle to hold on to to support some upper body weight. 2 Quote
WendyLady Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 Brad and Bob (as they say - the worlds most famous physical therapists on the internet) have many videos of simple exercises to help with back pain. Search their YouTube for what you need. This video is an older one, but it helps explain how bending over can worsen back pain in the long run… My husband’s back went out and after getting very limited advice from his doc, these videos made a huge difference. 2 Quote
KatieJ Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 (edited) Use heat! We’ve always been usung ice but recently PT are saying use heat. She and I are very much on board with using heating pads . We use it 1-4 times a day depending on pain levels . Edited March 28, 2022 by KatieInMN 1 Quote
Starr Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 You can get a wrap that wraps around your lower back and gives support while it feels off. Quote
