athena1277
I plan to buy the R&S math for 1st grade to start soon. Do I need to buy the blacklines and flashcards? I have tons of store bought flashcards - will these work? Also, where have you found to be the cheapest place to buy this curriculum? Thanks! Yes, you need the flash cards. And yes, you need the teacher manual, too (even though you didn't ask). The best place to buy Rod and Staff materials is from Rod and Staff Publishers :-) They don't have a Web site, but you can call them at (606) 522-4348 and order whatever you want. coffeefreak
Not to be contrary:D But I found the opposite to be true. We NEEDED the blacklines and used them because my daughter needed more practice. The flashcards made her break out in hives. OK, not really, but until you know how your child will learn math, I think it's good to get it all, and then just not use what you don't need. Beth in Central TX
As always a 3rd opinion....I didn't use the blacklines or flashcards for R&S Math 1 last year when my youngest son was in K. The blacklines are overkill for this math program since it already has plenty of drill in each lesson; they would be beneficial for child that is having trouble memorizing the math facts. The flashcards are way overpriced and huge. They are made of heavy cardstock so unless you can sell them locally, they will be difficult to sell on-line due to the increase amount you will pay in postage. Personally, I used the flashcards we had left over from Saxon math. I did use the blacklines for R&S Math 3 when my middle son transitioned from Saxon to R&S, but only because he needed the extra drill to memorize his basic math facts. They worked great in that regard, but I haven't had a need to use them again. So far, we've used R&S math 1 through 6 and 8. I always order directly from R&S at 1-606-522-4348. I'm not sure when you need to purchase your items, but in March/April, R&S has their 10% off sale for all items that begin with a "1". HTH! Garga
I feel you need everything. Especially the teacher's manual. I guess you could use other flashcards, but I'm not sure. There are a bunch of flashcards where the child is supposed to figure out the number before or after a number. Those aren't standard flashcards. Also, I love the blacklines. I do NOT have ds do every single problem on them. I just draw little arrows to the particular problems I want him to do. I think it has solidified math for him. He's a little whiz at it now. suzf242
It probably depends on your child what you need to buy. I didn't buy the blacklines or flashcards and then found out that I didn't even need the teacher manual -- just the workbooks. We teach most of the concepts on the side, on our own, and just use the workbooks to reinforce. Math only takes dd about 15 to 20 minutes a day, and she really seems to enjoy just doing the workbooks. I got one of the workbooks and teacher manual new and very cheap on ebay and got the other workbook directly from Rod and Staff. Take care, Suzanne

Well, I said you need the flashcards because they are part of the scripted oral classtime, which I consider to be important for R&S's first three grade levels, and that they are reinforced in the seatwork. R&S does consider the blackline masters to be optional; "optional" means that some dc will need them and some won't. :-) Of course, they also include patterns for the visuals; they're almost worth the cost just for that. :001_smile:
