vonfirmath Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) 1) I don't think so. It kind of depends on what the point was. I don't think of Spanx in the same way you do though "Someone who makes money off of telling women their bodies don't look right" -- I'd have been thinking of the rolemodel of that female CEO who saw a problem that needed solving and solved it -- pretty much what you say. 2) Talk to the Scout master and see why she decided to bring it up? It's possible she felt the role model of a female CEO was a very empowering thing. Edited February 1, 2022 by vonfirmath Quote

So what, to your mind, is the problem that the brand solves? 2) Talk to the Scout master and see why she decided to bring it up? vonfirmath Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 The Spanx I have is used as a second layer to stay warm on the coldest of days. It fits under my other clothes very nicely Quote

prairiewindmomma Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 WWID? I would chalk it up mentally under the category of "maybe this troop isn't a good fit" and I'd let it go. The rest of life just has too much drama to give much emotional energy to this. You saw the issue, you mentioned it, she didn't change her topic, and that's just another flag that she does what she wants as scoutmaster without regard to others. I think you're ultimately going to have to decide whether this troop is a good fit or not. It's hard to ignore the influence of a scoutmaster in a troop. It can be done, but those weren't my favorite years of scouting. 1 Quote

BusyMom5 Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 I think it depends on how she phrased it- and I do not see Spanx in the same way you do. Lots if people wear them bc THEY want to change the way they look- like wearing makeup. Would you be okay with Mary Kay being an example? If she focus on what body shapes should use Spanx, then I'd probably be upset. I have a lot of issues after many pregnancies and sometimes just like a Spanx type product to stop my jiggling. I prefer to wear a top when working out bc it just holds belly and boobs in better than just a bra. I think you are defining their use in a very narrow way- like they are just to make women look better or sexy for men. As for what I would do- I guess that depends on how upset you are. I would overlook it, be sure my DD understood my POV, and not worry about it. If its a repeated thing, I'd probably just stop going. 1 Quote

I have a friend for whom this would be a deal breaker. It's very important to her that they see examples of strong female role models in their life. She would be really upset by the shape wear issue. For me, it's less about the shape wear and more about the fact that she didn't listen to my concerns. Not every single one needs to be addressed, but it's so easy to change topics for a SM minute. If a parent came to me with an issue, then I would change the SM minute unless it was about a very serious safety topic/important issue (like abuse prevention, bullying, racism, etc.). Even still, I would talk about it in council before it was presented to the kids precisely because I know it would be a hot button topic. The SM issue now combined with her recent past history would have me giving her the side eye. I would want to see that my girls are really thriving before continuing to put time and effort into an activity that leaves me having to deal with issues on the regular. I personally think it was a poor choice of topic, fwiw. There are all kinds of other products that solve problems. By nature, that's what products do--they solve problems for people. Quote
