wintermom Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 (edited) My standard poodle really hates winter walking with the slush and salt. I borrowed a pair of plastic booties, and he wore them without any issues and we were able to go for a nice long walk. It was definitely an improvement! However, 2/4 of the plastic booties got ripped from his claws, so I'd like to find some cloth ones. Any recommendations? Edited January 29, 2022 by wintermom Quote
DreamerGirl Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 I have zero knowledge about dogs and shoes except dog with booties in TX heat. But I did see a Disney program about Alaskan Sled dogs in the Iditarod wearing socks. Perhaps something like that ? They were all running in the snow and no one seemed to take them off. 1 Quote

They make all different kinds of dog booties - some for heat and some for cold. I need waterproof ones that don't rip and are actually waterproof to keep the yucky salt slush/liquid off the dog's paws. Quote
***** Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 https://www.amazon.com/PawZ-Rubber-Booties-Waterproof-Protection/dp/B001J22876/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2CHG4ZZ9P89OT&keywords=pawz&qid=1643510473&sprefix=paw%2Caps%2C326&sr=8-3 These...seriously! I doubted them myself, but they were a lifesaver for our older dog. When the temp. reached below 20, he would get little ice balls stuck on the fur between pads. He often stopped to try to get them out when on walks, or ended up limping. He didn't seem to need them above 20 degrees. But they are made to protect feet on those sizzling days when walking on hot sidewalks as well. He only needed them on his front paws, and were reusable for quite some time, so a package lasted a few winters for us. Yes, they were tricky to get on, but if your dog will hold still long enough, it is worth it. Just be careful to either pull them over the dewclaw without hurting the dog, or keep it under it without tucking the claw in. Quote

These are what I used, and they ripped the first time he wore them. 😔 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 dd got some for when she took the dogs to muddy dog park. It was hilarious watching one dog think if he raised his foot high enough, the booty would be gone when he put his foot back on the ground. 2 Quote
Granny_Weatherwax Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 Following I'm looking for long-wearing booties also. Our town salts the ice on roads and sidewalks and it's terrible for paws. Quote
wathe Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 We used Muttluks (original, fleece lined) for our small mostly poodle mutt, and they lasted well. This was a 15 pound dog though, who was quite dainty on his feet. Also, this was 10 years ago. 1 Quote

Maybe your dogs nails were freshly cut (and it made them sharp)? Or nails too long? It's hard to tell. I am rather frugal and we re-used the booties more than 7-8 times. My dog has since passed, and second dog re-used one of the worn pairs already and it is still intact. We don't have sidewalks here, maybe that was a factor of wearing them out? 🤷♀️ Quote

The pair I used may have been a little too small as well, and I tried to pull it up more causing the claw to dig into the bootie. 1 Quote

Lucy the Valiant Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Etsy has some interesting looking ones, but I don't know any reviews personally. We recently adopted a dog from Houston to way up north, and the poor thing was shocked by the snow & cold. He started LIMPING which temporarily freaked me out, but when I realized it was because he was getting snow in his paws, we were able to just ease him into things. We celebrate his 1-year-with-us this week ❤️ and he has definitely adjusted both to our family and to the snow. I'm thankful, because my next move was to try to MAKE him some boots from an old waterproof coat, and I suspect he wouldn't appreciate that very much at all. (He's ~60ish lbs so not huge but not tiny.) Quote
wintermom Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 I just bought these online. My brother recommended them, and they didn't break the bank! Muttluks Woof Walkers. Quote
