Taryn Schnugh Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 Hey Y'all, I am looking for a art history course, that is more reformed (don't mind nudity). I have the Art History from Veritas Press, but I feel like I need more to go on for the older kids. And I need more understanding and knowledge. Perhaps a course for myself? Any ideas? Thanks so much Taryn Quote
alisha Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 I haven't used it with my kids, but have friends who recommend the Sister Wendy books and DVD's. Just something to research depending on what recommendations you get. 1 1 Quote
Miss Tick Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 I highly recommend The Annotated Mona Lisa by Carol Strickland. It is a straight forward approach. Sister Wendy's books have a lot of great pictures of the art, another option would be The Big Book of Art, by Collins. Your library may have some other options you could try out. You want to be able to see examples of the different artists and genres of art and those omnibus books are great for that. I found a copy of the course book for the Great Courses art course when I did this a few years ago with a middle grades coop class. That book had some concise vocabulary definitions that we discussed. In the end I went with a chronological approach that I put together based on divisions played out in a junior fiction art history book. I made a little set of 15 miniature art books with an explanation of the art period on the first page and then examples of major works along with where they were located when possible in case anyone wanted to see something in person. I was so proud of that project! 1 1 Quote
Shelly in VA Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 We were very pleased with this course Charlotte Mason Inspired High School Fine Arts from Music in Our Homeschool last year. It covers music, art, and poetry appreciation from different eras, but you could easily adapt it if you wanted to focus on art appreciation. We did it with another family and added in several projects and field trips. I also like the Sister Wendy resources and The Annotated Mona Lisa book. I haven't seen The Big Book of Art, so I cannot speak to that. 1 Quote
carrierocha Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 Khan Academy has an AP Art History class that I have pulled from during our art appreciation discussions at home https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ap-art-history 2 1 Quote
jplain Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 We loved Smarthistory/Khan Academy art history so much that I felt like I should start sending Christmas cards to Beth Harris and Steven Zucker, the co-founders of Smarthistory. They present the material so engagingly that we wound up spending a LOT more time on ancient art history than I anticipated. 1 1 Quote
