...but it's okay, because the project is complete and we gave it to her. 🙂

We clipped the best leaf of home-grown basil in her cage and she LOVED it. I have never seen so much enthusiasm over a single item of food, and this bird loves to eat.* Who knew?

What are your animal companions up to?

*Her every day diet includes: apple; broccoli, spinach, or kale; mixed seed; different mixed seed for foraging; egg food; millet, cuttlebone; and sometimes a honey treat stick. She eats better than me.

Boo (black cat) brought a live lizard inside today. This is better than when he brings in a live chipmunk or bird. Then after his conquest, he slept by the fire in our living room. The lizard was released unharmed lol.

The old girl Eskimo mix loves going for walks in this cold weather. She gets very frisky for a 13 yr old dog. I wish it would snow for her.

The young “baby doggie” is currently asleep under the sheets and down comforter. I always worry she’s not getting enough oxygen. Most nights she will eventually poke her little snoot out from under the covers. So I wake up face to face with baby doggie. And dh on the other side of the bed. Baby doggie must be between us.

I haven’t mentioned the other cats. This is empty nester/animal rescue life for us.

Our tiny Siamese cat loves to stalk the tall standard poodle. When the dog notices, he just stands there on high alert. When she's feeling really frisky she'll jump out at him and hiss while posing as a classic scary Halloween cat with the puffed up tail and arches back. Once she even took a swipe at the dog with her paw. I chased her away at that point. Can't have her actually scratching the dog.

Our cats seem unsure about My dad being here. The snake is sleeping (it's winter. He does that). The mealworms are continuing to eat styrofoam (past science project that is now halfway through it's third year).

My only animal companions are my mice. I hope they're dying. I've certainly been encouraging their deaths, the nasty little vermin.

But I feel like I've spent a lot of time with everyone else's dogs lately. My in laws poodle had to be drugged up the whole time we were there. He nearly jumped off the walls and every time you petted him, he basically went nuts. "He's so calm now on these anxiety meds!" I'm telling you, that dog must be nuts to deal with most of the time.

My friend's big pit mix really desperately needed my attention during yoga. Her ear has some sort of pus filled infection where it's all swollen and she's like, make it stop. This meant, of course, that she needed to stop me doing any sun salutes and demand I rub the hurting ear.

We have a small menagerie, but the current funniest pets are the two budgies. Before they came to live with us, I never could have imagined so much personality packed into a tiny bird. They recently discovered that if they throw food pellets into the air purifier, they make a delightful clack-clack-clack sound until the fan blades pulverize the pellet. Then they can start again. They like to sit on our shoulders. One of them likes to snuggle under my chin. He's also the bitey bird, so I have to be careful. The other is too active to sit in one place very long. He likes to fly around the room, then return to home base on a shoulder. Or on top of dh's head. They love Sal Khan's voice. Every time ds watches Khan academy they sing along.

Newest foster puppy arrived yesterday morning.  Did a brief introduction to my two dogs and our other foster puppy before I crashed (we were transport drivers and had been awake for most of the previous 24 hours).  Then the dogs took turns sleeping so very little interaction yesterday.  This morning is a whole nother story.  Bark, growl run around and bark some more.  Plus I have people working on an addition to the house so my two dogs are an absolutely mess today.  Too much going on! I know their stress is through the roof but not much I can do about it.

Whenever I give my bunnies a treat, Rusty eyes it with suspicion.  I will poke him gently with the offending vegetable (like a stick of celery).  He will attack it and bite it and then go "Yum!  I guess I do like this!" and will cheerfully chow down.
