A few weeka ago, Nan in Mass posted her son's report...

where he wrote in the style of ben Franklin. My son just finished a short piece in which he wrote as an anti-federalist in the style of Patrick henry. I loved his piece. Now mind you, this is my very reluctant writer...so there are som e misplaced commas, etc. BUT I loved his enthusiasm for the subject.

OK...here it is:

Gentlemen, in my experience it seems to me that there can only be one form of government that will not become destructive of itself. Without particular rights to each state, how can a government be called anything other than a simple monarchy, which we so recently and persistently fled from? Are we to break away from a king because he is unjust, merely to set up another in his place? How, I ask you, can we be sure of legal and rightful activity without a written bill of rights? For as many of you may know, without a written law right and wrong become so fluid and meaningless that a man may well wrong another and yet still not pay a penalty. When a people wish to adopt a system, simply because it is new, and not because it has been tested and tried and found trustworthy, that system will most assuredly be its own demise. How does this system of checks and balances come through when, through a bribe or other such means of persuasion, all members of government are banded against the people? What good is a peoples militia when the government controls all weapons and heavy artillery? Please, for all our sakes, rethink this constitution, and think not about what’s best for you, the politicians of America, but what is best for the people of America. This I ask you to consider in all haste, before a decision is met.

I would encourage you Mom's with reluctant writers to try this ...it was really fun...and I did't have to assign it as it was part of his Omnibus 3 class...which is absolutely awesome, by the way!

Blessings,

Faithe

For last week's Omnibus 1 assignment, my ds wrote a speech that Servilius might have given when he stood before the Roman people and pleaded for their help. Livy describes the situation and the result, but doesn't include his speech. My son entered into this assignment with enthusiasm and produced a rousing speech. After proofreading it for him, my jaw dropped and I said, "You may never hear these words from me again, but I have no suggestions - this is great!" He gave the speech to his class this week and did a great job! What a fun assignment!

P.S. Here's his speech:

Good day, people of Rome. I am Servilius, consul of Rome. Please allay your complaints for a moment, so that I may address you as to our great empire’s crisis. People are flooding the streets, putting at risk the lives of any senators that happen to be outside. Gangs of protestors flock the city, causing chaos and confusion. An uprising is stirring because of these malicious protestors. Our Empire is wildly unsteady, weaving about like a drunken man who has drowned his senses in wine. It is because of these protestors that Rome is ready to topple. Meanwhile, our enemy, the Volscians march upon our very doorstep! Our soldiers will not fight. They have sided with the protestors due to the crisis within Rome. They do this because the soldiers that are not killed in battle return home to find their property pillaged. They are then expected to pay taxes when they have no means to do so. Soon they fall into debt and are enslaved.

The senate understands your plight and we are doing all that we can to help. But fellow Romans, we totter at doom’s chasm. You say that the Volscian slave masters will treat you better than your present captors! My friends this is not true, for I have issued a law that states that to enslave a fellow Roman and pillage his fields and his household is illegal. I do not speak empty words to you. I will do all I can to help you but if the Volscians are not defeated then everyone, even those with royal blood flowing in their veins will face slavery until death. The situation means death for all, your wives and your children, your mothers and fathers and brothers. No, my friends, I will not stand for this. We must fight for our wives and children. We must fight for Rome, for her fate rests on our shoulders! Now, muster the army and prepare for battle! Once again, the great legions of Rome will be led into war to defend all that Romans hold dear!

All I can say is WOW! I am impressed!

Is this for Mr. Etter's Omni 3 class?

My son is in Mr. Etter's Omnibus 3 class and he loves it! It has been by far one of my all time best homeschool investments. He is happy and challenged and I am reading along and enjoying our discussion time without worrying about whether I cover all the bases.
