I used one once. I tipped. They considered it an “audition” to be hired by me to work more or get on a regular cleaning schedule.

I am sure it varies. In my case, I was not impressed. At all. They just did not do a great job, and one cleaner spent almost the whole time trying to pressure me into signing on for a weekly gig.

I think your experience would depend entirely on the quality of that individual cleaning service.

My tipping for folks who work at the house is kind of random. For the college kid who helps me, I stock her favorite beverages and give her a meal or some snacks. I give her some extra cash here and there. When we have had repair people come, I might give a $20 to each worker for a long, elaborate job. For something quicker I might give less ($10?) and/or some baked goods.

Your supposed to tip cleaners? I swear I’m constantly learning new things about tipping. I used to give my mom’s cleaner who we paid for a large holiday bonus. She worked for herself. But the occasional cleaners we’ve had I’ve never tipped. Does it matter whether they are self-employed or working for someone else? We always try to use self-employed ones and not agencies. And I feel like we pay a very fair wage, way above minimum and our state has one of the highest minimums in the country, and provide all of the supplies.

Do you tip everyone who comes to your house to do anything?

I have never tipped a repair person.   And the (very) few cleaning people I have had, have worked for themselves and gotten all the $$.

I typically tip house call service workers who are working for someone else. I don’t keep hard and fast rules, myself. For example, I tip my self-employed groomer because someone who can manage my demon dog deserves more than she actually charges me.

Over the many years that I didn’t have extra money to spare, we mostly just avoided service calls and did what we could for the unavoidable, like people delivering large appliances in our awkward layout.

I would think a holiday bonus for a routine cleaner would be sufficient. For a one-time gig, a trial, or an occasional clean with rotating staff would make me more inclined to tip per job.

For my regular cleaners, I actually do a few holiday bonuses instead. Christmas, their birthday, and a summer bonus. For one time cleaning, I'd tip 20%.
