chocolate-chip chooky Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 I'm sorry. I'm sure this has been discussed multiple times over, but I can't find the relevant threads. I want to get my family on some supplements for immune boosting, and with the view to upping if we have a Covid exposure. We all already take 1000iu D3 daily, plus a general multivitamin. I'm thinking to add Vit C and Zinc. Any thoughts on suitable doses? And any thoughts on other supplements worth stocking up on, either as a general immune booster, or as a Covid response? Thank you 🌻 Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted January 5, 2022 Author Posted January 5, 2022 I'm reading this article: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnut.2020.606398/full Quote
gardenmom5 Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Monolaurin. It's one my ND put me on for immune boosting for my EBV. start low and work up the dosage. (I do 600mg 3x per day.) It's actually naturally occurring, but if you want a boost - you can add it in. 1 Quote
matrips Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 We do 1000 of Vit C and 50 of Zinc Propinlate (sp?) we also do Quercetin with Bromelain daily (goes with the zinc), and add NAC if exposed or feeling sick. keep up on magnesium and B as well. 1 1 Quote
MercyA Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Elderberry syrup. We buy this formula, which also contains echinacea. Too pricey to take every day, but taken at the first signs of a virus, it has worked very well for us in the past. 1 Quote
Melissa Louise Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 I don't think we can get NAC here, just an fyi. Quote

We have a brand here called Sambucol, which is based on black elderberry, I believe. I'll look into it. Quote
Melissa Louise Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 (edited) Nm o/s website. Sambucol is elderberry. You can get syrup or lozenges. Edited January 5, 2022 by Melissa Louise Quote

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll double check. A friend took it in the past and has had trouble getting it over the last year or so. Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted January 5, 2022 Author Posted January 5, 2022 Ooh, iherb seems to have the same one as @MercyArecommended. https://au.iherb.com/pr/nature-s-way-sambucus-immune-syrup-standardized-elderberry-8-fl-oz-240-ml/10605 1 Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted January 5, 2022 Author Posted January 5, 2022 @Melissa Louise One thing I like about iherb is that it tells you the expiration date of the product. I've been using iherb for a while now, after helpful people here put me onto inositol as an OCD supplement for my daughter. 1 Quote
Corraleno Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 I take 5000 IU of D3 w/100 mcg of the MK7 form of K2, 1000 mg of vitamin C w/quercetin, and a really good multi that includes 25 mg of zinc (plus I eat a lot of nuts and seeds, like hemp and pumpkin, which are really high in zinc). At the first sign of a cold I jump on the Sambucol, zinc lozenges, and NAC, and that usually nips it in the bud. 2 1 Quote
AngelaGT Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Elderberry syrup is super easy to make and much more economical. https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/elderberry-syrup-recipe 3 Quote
Ausmumof3 Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 I’ve found a black mores gummy that’s c, zinc and elderberry. I haven’t done much research but sambucol gummies that have similar have done magic for me before so I’m hoping these work the same. Quote
mommyoffive Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Is Elderberry ok to take for Covid now? I know in the start it was thought to maybe not be a good thing. Also what are you having your kids take? Quote

Also what are you having your kids take? I haven’t heard anything against it since the very beginning. I would think we would have if it were still considered a problem. I gave it to dh, but limited it to three days. 1 Quote
Shoeless Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Unless you are getting a LOT of sun on a daily basis, I would boost your vitamin D to 5000 IU. 1 Quote

My impression is that it's fine to take elderberry in the very beginning, but not a good idea to take it if the infection has already really taken hold and symptoms are becoming more serious. The logic is that you want to boost your body's first line of defense, but once it gets established you don't want to risk adding fuel to the fire of a cytokine storm. 1 Quote
