blue plaid Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 Does anyone have experience/reviews/recommendations? I am particularly interested in German 4 and 5. My son will finish German 3 with OSU German online this spring and I am wondering where to enroll him next fall since that program is shutting down. So far WTM Academy is the only place I've seen for high schoolers (for German 4 and 5.) Our local community college has some upper level German potentially, but right now there are only 2 students registered for the spring semester so I don't know if those classes actually happen. (I will investigate this in the coming weeks.) Thanks for any ideas/reviews! 1 Quote
Eos Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 Even if the cc doesn't do the classes, maybe the teacher lives in your area and you can offer to pay them the same as you would pay for a cc class? Zoom or in-person? Live classes for one student have been the most rigorous of any type for my kids. 1 Quote
threedogfarm Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 My teen took German at the WTMA for two years. He decided to not continue for German III because he felt he was not learning how to speak the language. We lucked into finding a US student who was supposed to be in Germany to complete her Masters but was stuck in the US due to COVID. He's finishing up "German IV" with her this year and it has been an amazing experience. He can now speak German and read German. He actually looked for colleges where he could still study German and do a study abroad program in Germany even though he doesn't want to major in it. Doing one-on-one classes made such a difference for him. The teacher at the WTMA is wonderful and talented but my son just wasn't learning from flash cards and class. That said, my daughter is in Japanese III at the WTMA and that has been an amazing experience for her. I think the different experiences are a combination of student learning style, class organization, teacher, and textbook choice. You could email the WTMA to set up a meeting with the German teacher to discuss the class structure and where your son should be placed. I have found the WTMA to be very accommodating and supportive. 1 Quote
