bookbard Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 We just watched Encanto and really liked it! My kids are 9 & 11. In Australia, we don't have a lot of access to knowledge about South or Central America. We had to look up where Colombia was, and worked out why there were so many references to arepa in the movie. Are there any good kid-friendly books about the country or general area? 1 Quote
Kiara.I Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 (edited) Try your local library first, if there's one nearby. My kids are really liking the YouTube channel Geography Now, but there is occasional language so you might want to preview. The BBC is also a wealth of educational videos on various topics, sorted by age. I wouldn't swear they cover geography but it's worth a gander. Edited January 1, 2022 by Kiara.I 2 Quote
Dianthus Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 Our library has this Families of the World series of DVDs. We have enjoyed them. I'm sorry there is not one on Columbia, but there are some in South and Central America. You could also try to find the DK Children Just Like Me books. 4 Quote
bookbard Posted December 30, 2021 Author Posted December 30, 2021 Well we have just ordered the special flour for 'arepa' so that should be fun to make. We did find a good video which talked about Colombia and how it links in to the movie. 1 Quote

I suspect it was on Netflix (which is like looking for a needle in a haystack) but I can't even remember if it was in English or in Spanish. I believe it was NOT produced by National Geographic or a similar company. Possibly produced here in Colombia. I suggest looking on YouTube and searching for "Biodiversity+Colombia" or something like that without the quote marks. Your DC could do worse than to study the Biodiversity of Colombia. Lots to offer people who are interested in Biodiversity here. I think it was approximately 60 minutes in length. I watched it twice. The first time with my DW and then by myself. I think DD watched it after that but she has no memories of it. 1 Quote
