Moonhawk Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) Anyone got (hopefully not too serious) mishaps happening on your holidays? Here: The kitchen faucet broke! Of course just as I started prepping for company and making the food. Didn't do any dishes last night, so today after unwrapping presents the kids took the dishes outside to rinse them off with the hose while DH got hot water from bathroom to wash in the kitchen sink. Took about 1.5 hours to do the dishes. Thankfully we have disposable plates and cutlery to get through the weekend, lol. Also I forgot the yams in the oven overnight, lol. So tempted to eat them anyway but caution has prevailed so far. Edited December 25, 2021 by Moonhawk 7 Quote
Laura Corin Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 I was peeling tiny onions. One leaped from my hand and my knife stabbed me in my finger. Half an hour later, once I was bandaged up, I smelled something strange. I looked down, and the handle of the same accursed knife was flaming merrily after I had let it protrude into the gas flame. Lunch was good. 5 Quote
Terabith Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 My sister's sink collapsed. It is currently propped up with a car jack and a 2x4. 3 5 Quote
*Jessica* Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 Mine was very minor, but my kids will be laughing about it long after I’m dead. I always buy everyone a new ornament every year and write their name and the year on it. This year I wrote 2001 on the ornaments and didn’t realize my mistake until one of them was like, “Huh?!” 😂 1 11 Quote
Tap Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) Every item I cooked had a complication. It made cooking more stressful than ever LOL but it all turned out delicious. Also, everyone decided to hang out in the kitchen, so I was constantly pushing people aside and it added to my distractions. Happy Amazing distractions! but still harder to keep track of everything cooking. After cooking for 6 hours (desserts and dinner), we finally ate at almost 9pm. DD23 wanted to spend the day cooking with me, so I didn't premake any desserts. They live a day away, so we don't see eachother much. She ended up getting to my house 2 hours later than expected, and then was too tired to actually help. 😞 That meant I had to scramble to get everything done. She and her husband helped a bit, but it would have been nicer to premake the desserts and then just focus on dinner. I printed every recipe I was using for guides (I always alter recipes). Due to starting late, I changed my mind on the cookie recipe at the last minute. I pulled a recipe up online. When I was adding ingredients, dd 23 looked up something on my computer, and when the computer came back to me, I didn't realize the recipe had changed. When I got to the last ingredient (which didn't make sense), I realized the error. I had to quickly alter the recipe to make it work, but they turned out great. The Brussel sprouts with cheese/bacon. I keep forgetting to use a stainless steel pan to start the cooking process (I used my cast iron). So I had to stop the process midway and change pans. When I did, I let them sit in the cast iron instead of changing pans and then letting them sit. Due to this, they ended up a bit scorched on the bottom. LOL And then, I forgot the bacon, so I had to add it half way through. I forgot to add the melted butter (sitting in the microwave) in the pecan pie. I pulled it out, after cooking for 10 minutes and stirred it in. LOL Oh, and I couldn't find the pie pan, so I had to make it in the deep dish glass pie dish. The crust had to be rolled too thin and it definity didn't look pretty without the fluted edge, but still delicious! DD15 must have used up my beef broth (she likes to make soup), that I had planned to use to add volume to the gravy. All I had was chicken broth. So...we had chicken/beef gravy. LOL Still yummy, just different than I usually serve with beef. The prime rib was very, very rare. I think my digital thermometer is going out. It said it was 140* and when sitting it should have gone up from there. It was definitely closer to 125*. We finished a few portions off in a skillet for about 15 seconds to get it more to some guests liking. This morning....I found the remaining meat the microwave (were we put meat when eating meals due to counter grazing dog). A few pounds of gorgeous, rare prime rib meat, when into the trash. The potatoes peeled fine, but about half the bag was rotten in the middle. Which of course I didn't know until after they were peeled and I started slicing them. I threw away half of the potatoes. Between the rib and potatoes going it the trash, we only had a small portion of side-dish leftovers, and dd15 ate those for breakfast. Everyone was joyful, encouraging and having a great time. So, it all worked out, but boy...it was a stressful 6 hours! Edited December 25, 2021 by Tap 3 Quote
HomeAgain Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 We forgot to make dessert. Dh wanted to make an apple spice cake, gathered all the ingredients for it, and then realized the kids don't eat cooked apples. Ever. Not even my awesome apple pie. They especially do not eat them in chunks, and not surrounded by cake. So dh went on the hunt for a new recipe, and then another...and then another...and by the time he decided on one the stores were closed for the holiday. Which brought us back to apple spice cake, just without the apples. Oh, and in place of the apples, a streusel topping. By the time he finished tweaking, the final result would have been coffee cake. 😄 That didn't excite anyone. I figured I'd whip something up today and between listening to the battlebot toys for 8 straight hours and doing all the cooking for dinner.....frankly, I just didn't think about putting the effort into dessert after. We have coffee and chocolates to sustain us. 4 Quote
Dmmetler Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 DH tripped and broke a bone in his foot! 15 Quote
bookbard Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 18 minutes ago, Dmmetler said: DH tripped and broke a bone in his foot! Oh no! I hope he heals quickly. I ended up with a bad sunburn on one arm, and can't quite work it out. It was definitely a very hot day, but I stayed under cover most of it. I did spend the last say forty-five minutes out watching the kids play cricket, and that's when it must have happened. But it was super cloudy and stormy at that point, and to have just one arm burned feels strange - I wonder whether the sun was reflecting off something and I didn't notice? 2 Quote
Pintosrock Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 I always give my daughter a couple of books with a note inscribed from "Blitzen, Santa's Most Literary Reindeer." This year, I signed them from Rudolph (totally not intentional, I just wasn't thinking clearly.) Dd8 (who still completely believes in everything Santa) was completely distraught, thinking that Blitzen must have gone blind or died. She became melancholy and out of sorts all morning. Later, we called my grandfather (whom she also believes is really Santa Claus, but that's a different story). He explained that Blitzen and Rudolph traded roles this year. He went off on a great digression, talking about how with global warming, he didn't absolutely need Rudolph's nose to guide the sleigh, giving Blitzen a turn. And how Rudolph is trying to improve his reading skills and did the book selections this year. But alas, he's not sure if it'll all work out or not... Grandpa for the save! 15 1 3 Quote
itsheresomewhere Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 I bought two presents in October and hid them I thought in the normal spot. One is the one of four things the one wanted and can not be replaced. They are not there and I have looked everywhere. Fortunately, my teens think we should do the twelve days of Christmas now with an event called- the hunt for the gifts. I might get a really clean house out of this. 7 5 Quote
Storygirl Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 We brought all of the gifts out from under the tree and distributed them to each person. Before starting to unwrap, I realized that DD16 had one less gift than her siblings, and I knew that couldn't be right. We looked all over for the missing gift, which was complicated by the fact that I didn't know which item was missing. DD was good-natured about it and said she would open it later, when it appeared. Partway through our gift opening, DH pulled some lotion and perfume out of a gift bag addressed to him, and TADA -- the missing gift! DD pretended she hadn't seen; DH plopped it hurriedly back into the gift bag and passed it over. Minor crisis averted! 7 Quote
Dianthus Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 I made homemade eggnog and put in a regular milk jug. It was less than half full. After our Christmas dinner and dessert, I was eating dessert last, and got up to get some eggnog. My mom had put it back in the fridge. I grabbed it, put my hand over the lid, and gave it the customary shake before pouring, but she hadn't put the lid on, so it went all over me, the floor, the fridge, even though my hand was over the top where I though the lid was. Ugh. I quietly wiped it up, changed my soaked socks, wiped myself down and poured some eggnog and ate dessert. I still smell like nutmeg. 3 Quote
Carrie12345 Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 Super minor, but nerve wracking. Santa brought ds stupid magnetic balls, as requested. Ds lives with a >4lb dog. In a set of 30 magnetic balls, we had 29 at one point. After doing a normal search, we had to unload all of the bagged wrapping paper and go through each and every piece. Thankfully, we did eventually find it toward the very end. (It was me. I was the overconfident Santa.) 3 Quote

historically accurate Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 MIL was grouchy yesterday, so every activity was punctuated with long-suffering sighs. I thought her hands were hurting her (rheumatoid arthritis), so I tried to mitigate that with some slower games. Card games probably hurt her hands more, but she refused any offers of card holders or kid helpers. My brother declined my offer of making a birthday cake for him because he had found a cheesecake recipe he wanted to try. It wasn't gluten-free (MIL has celiac). She decided to take some home to eat around the Oreo crust, and then brother realized he had used a tiny bit of flour in the cheesecake itself. Fortunately, MIL says she didn't react to it. Funny story: as I was packing up some leftovers for MIL, she chided me that "I'm only one person! I don't need that much ham/potatoes/etc" with every item. My brother was packing her up some cheesecake (before he realized it had flour). He had stuffed like 1/4 of the cheesecake in the container, and he didn't get any comment on how "How much food do you think I eat?!?" So she took her miniscule amount of lunch leftovers and her ginormous "slice" of cheesecake home. 1 5 Quote
Tenaj Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) My dh's family cannot eat ham without raisin sauce. Before I married into his family I had never heard of such a thing but it's a normal part of my holiday cooking now and has been for the past 32 years. Yesterday I got all the food on the table, looked at my list and checked it twice and called everyone to the buffet table. During my fil's prayer I gasped out loud because I had forgotten to make the raisin sauce. It was too late as everything else was ready - they joked that they were going to disown me -lol! It was all in good fun. I still don't know how I forgot. I had checked the day before to make sure I had the raisins. I think my mistake was not setting them on the counter. I hadn't written it down on my menu list either. Edited December 26, 2021 by Tenaj Auto correct disaster 4 Quote
