I’m so naive. I thought I would use it to keep up to date with neighborhood happenings since things are getting bad every where. It’s mostly just pictures of lost animals and people boldly asking for free manual labor. It makes me sad all day. I can’t.

I like how every animal is lost.  No, that is a wild rabbit/fox not a dog.

Oh no! They are dogs (and cats), really! Photos of the cutest animals ….and then I wonder all day if they are running around lost still, or did they make it home.

My area had an enterprising mom set up a facebok page that's similar to but predated nextdoor.  I'm not on it but my kids read it to me and post stuff there that we are selling.  It started as a sell/trade space but also functions as a neighborhood chat - road conditions, lost pets, what-is-that-ambulance-doing? and so forth.  There is a certain amount of complaining but if it starts, there is generally some gentle teasing or pushback to get them off it.  There are also lovely posts from people just appreciating their community.  My daughter posted a thank you to whoever anonymously dropped off a plate of gorgeous cookies a few days ago and we could not figure out the culprit.

Yes, I have seen some of that. It’s very nice.

At least I can ignore the stupid on NextDoor.

The ones that annoy me are those super-helpful Ring camera Neighbors posts that urgently warn us at 3:00am to GET YOUR CHILDREN AND PETS INDOORS IMMEDIATELY because there's a vicious wild animal on the loose!!!

And it's a possum.

Yeah. Thanks for that.

And PSA: If your young children are out playing in the yard at 3am, a possum is not the biggest problem here.

The complaining is amazing.  My favorite are about people walking near their house on the sidewalk.

We get people complaining about neighbors and visitors to a different house parking in front of their house. On a public road.

I don't have the app but I get alerts in my email inbox. I rarely log in to read anything but sometimes I get weirdly entranced by some long thread of complaints about who knows what - a bad contractor, annoying music, fireworks - and it can be a very entertaining waste of time. I have not found anything useful on it.

Also, though I live in PA, there are a lot of posters in FL. So it's not even relevant to my area.

And yeah, the people who posts photos of someone they don't know walking down their street... wow. I walk a lot and don't restrict myself to my own neighborhood. Someday I might see a photo of a plump white-haired lady with the caption "this person is lurking in the neighborhood, beware!" And it'll be me. 🤣

I only get the weekly digest. No notifications. It’s helpful to hear things like “what’s going into that new building going up?” or “there’s a meeting about that new proposed bypass next Thursday”. The digest keeps me up to date, but I feel freer to scroll right past lost animals and videos of bears on someone’s porch

In our town NextDoor is rarely used.  There are several FB pages with all sorts of things.  There are some really mean people who post terrible things.  I get tired of all the fighting constantly and I NEVER post or reply because I don't want the mean people coming after me.  Since I am not from here I have used it to learn about the town.  And if some big 'thing' happens you will find much more detail on there than in the news that is for sure.  For instance, currently a woman was set on fire in her sleeping bag behind a store and she died about 3 weeks later.  Not one. word. in the news.  I don't know if it is because she was a homeless/addict/mentally unwell person or what.....but it is so weird to me.

My neighborhood is cows.

Fortunately they don’t use apps.  I was very glad to leave our last neighborhood and the incredibly annoying drama on the Facebook page.

The cows seem to have much less drama.

Our Next Door is a glimpse into the ugly underbelly of our area. Adding to the above, which are universal Next Door irritations:

Ours recently organized a … (wait for it) … book burning. Yep. A real, bonafide book burning. 😱 The discussion went on and on, and they did indeed hold it, near the school superintendent’s office (must have been on private property). That same superintendent resigned a couple days ago, sadly. The lead up discussion was, ummmm, heated and very, very ugly.

And my favorite recent brow beating of a local trying to do something good: a guy wanted to petition the county so that trash trucks in the suburban areas had to follow local noise ordinances (they don’t, here). I was cheering because insomnia, and the trash truck wakes me at 3 am once a week, and I’m up for hours). Wow. That guy got called all kinds of names for “not putting his trash out on time” and being a “sissy.” They didn’t just not sign his petition, they really slammed him. Also, ugly.

But I keep it for the lost dogs, ha!

Every few months here we get someone complaining about the sketchy looking ice cream truck in their neighborhood.  Whoever posted gets so much heat for it every time.  Apparently the ice cream man is a super great guy who just doesn’t have the money for a nicer vehicle.  Some people got together and helped him a bit a while back, but it’s still rather run down looking, so people continue to post about him.  I’m just bummed that he never comes down our street, probably because there aren’t many kids.

Now, in their defense…lol…my new neighbors had a black Escalade brigade parking outside my house on a *regular* basis when they first moved in. They have a perfectly good, looooong driveway and 3-car garage that could absorb some of the extra traffic. Did they use it? NO. #grumpygus

We live in a dumbbell cul-de-sac so there are only 10 families in the area. We have CONSTANT lookee-lous. I have never seen fit to report anyone b/c big whoop. Who cares? but DD says my inner ‘Karen’ is fierce. She’s not wrong *sips tea* I just keep it in check. I love that my kids know me. Lol.

We get alot of people asking for money on ours 😞

Also, a fair number of people that post to introduce themselves with way too much personal information. Like their address and the names and ages of their kids, etc.

The book burning made me laugh. I'm tempted to try out next door just to see what's going on. We moved to our new area earlier this year, and the neighborhood Facebook group has been helpful and positive.

Don’t do it!!

Ours is mostly benign. Primarily people introducing themselves after moving here, searches for plumbers or electricians who will actually show up, fox sightings, and complaining about the power company. I don’t look at it often but it’s rarely entertains (or, in the case of book burnings, terrifying).

The book burning felt positively dystopian!

It’s definitely a glimpse into the neighborhood. 🤣

Our nextdoor isn't active. Everyone us on fb, griping about Jesus, guns, and liberals. (We need more of the first two, less of the 3rd, they say). There's also an old lady that gripes non stop about how the neighborhood is going to ruin with all these "newcomers" who don't appreciate good, country living, and she's lived here 25 years and has never seen so much disgraceful behavior and these teens today and these schools today and she's been here 25 years and never has she seen such awful....

Shut up, shut up, shut up, Kayleen!

Pre-nextdoor, my grandmother used to take out her golf clubs and send ‘packages’ back to her offending neighbors. I witnessed this activity myself. I was never more proud. 🤣

Wait. What? What does this mean? Doggie poop? If so, oh man. Your grandma? 😂 I can’t help but love that. So many rude/irresponsible animal owners here in the South. Maybe that’s why there’s so many lost animals around here.

Yup. She did that. Sent the poop right back to its owners. I was, geeze, 12/13? Blew my mind.

You know what? That is full-blown Madea right there.

It so was but my grandma was so damned ‘respectable’ that I gained a whole new perspective. Walk softly. Carry a big club.

I just have to say, the mental image of a grandma out in slippers and house coat with her putter flinging poop….that made my day.

lol!! In her defense, she was fully dressed in peddle pushers, a cardigan, and salt/pepper wig. She did use her putter tho. I learned my shade from the best.

So the news finally picked up the story of the burned woman. Today.   Someone on FB posted a link to it.  On a post/link about a woman being burned to death in her sleeping bag someone has to post this

Was a gun involved?  If  not ban, matches.  it is the device,  not the person who has caused this.

I just can't.

I’m all for good fun but this is awful and tragic, cruel.

I left the neighborhood FB group months ago because it was so over-the-top negative. Honestly, my mental health has improved greatly by reducing my social media activity. I highly recommend everyone curate their FB friends, groups, feed. You'll feel so much better.

I have apparently ticked off whomever runs the local buy-sell-trade group because they declined my request to join multiple times. DH says it's probably run by a homeschooler and that is why 😁 I am persona non grata with the locals since the pandemic, lol
