Dear Hive,

Can I ask a favor?  My son has to make an online poll for his AP government class.  He needs to collect as many answers as possible.  If you wouldn't mind taking his poll, I would be very thankful.   All answers are confidential and this is only used to teach him about collecting data online.

Also, if you have any feedback on the wording of his questions, please also leave that too.

I couldn't find a space to leave feedback on wording so I will here.  Many of his questions are too black and white.  I don't actually consider myself left or right leaning and am so very moderate with views all over the place that the left would call me right leaning and the right would call me left leaning.  The question about inefficient also was an awkward one to know how to answer.  The poll also sounded like it came from a very right leaning perspective using terms  like inefficient and infringed in ways that would probably probably put off left leaning folks (and did my left leaning parts lol).  I wanted to explain more about each answer of ask what he meant about inefficient or to tell more about my views on gun control because it is an amendment right to bear arms but it's how that looks that has so many, many interpretations.  So, I guess my feedback would be less loaded words and more choices or a box to give explanations.  Anyway, I mean all this in a total non-judgemental, teacher way.  Writing polls is hard.

Similarly to the responses above, I found the choices too black and white. Neither option really represents my views, especially about guns and politicians. People, even politicians, aren't monolithic, and some are more focused on themselves than others. Generalizations don't really work for me. Agreeing that polls are hard.

I did not have any problem completing the survey, and I think I feel protective of teen boys who have to make a survey.

Because I know what other posters mean, but I think it is a good survey anyways.

It comes across like the person answering is supposed to say they are in favor of the 2nd amendment, and think it means there is a right to bear arms without considering what it means to be in a militia, imo.

But I think that surveys without a lot of gray area can be more clear in their results, in their way.

You're right, and I wish I had worded my answer more carefully. Developing polls that answer the questions you intend is exceedingly difficult. Professionals often don't get it right, never mind high school students!

Some of the questions are clearly biased, towards right-leaning thinkers. I'd also agree with others that there should have been more options for answers and the wording shouldn't haven't been so biased. I'd say that your son's teacher might want to do a mini-lesson on bias in polling.

I wish my son was doing projects like this his AP government class! I didn’t have a problem with his questions, but did notice that while most age categories spanned 10 years, he had 30-49 lumped together- all us old people look the same 😂

Just mentioning in case it helps him before his teacher grades it.

Good luck to him!

I had no problems answering the questions but I am 250% positive it won’t represent the views of me and my household. The questions were definitely leading. I agree about the right to keep and bear arms. I disagree that it should be decoupled from a well-regulated militia. He didn’t ask about that (which is part of the same amendment). As he goes to evaluate his results and think through what he can reasonably/defensibly conclude, he might want to consider that b/c I’d have shredded it as a classmate. You won’t get answers to questions that you don’t ask. Good effort tho!

I want to take the poll, but I don't identify as right- or left-leaning. It would help if he added a "neither" option for that question.

+1

The events of the last two years created this scenario for me.

Yes, this.  For example, he has choices for left leaning and right leaning and nothing else.

I couldn’t submit because, even though I could stretch myself for other answers, I can’t complete the last one. If it had said “Di you think ALL politicians”, I could answer no. If it said “Do you think some politicians “ I could say yes. There are lots of politicians.

I wanted to thank you all for taking the time to take the poll.  That was very nice of you.   And I also want to thank those who took the time to give him your feedback.   I will have him read your comments as a learning experience.  🙂
