“JUST IN: Amazon Web Services suffers a major outage, causing issues for individuals, universities, governments and companies such as Instacart, Venmo, Kindle, Roku and Disney+, according to users.”

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-servers-are-down-and-its-affecting-dozens-of-services-2021-12

"The company confirmed the outage and said it's "investigating increased error rates for the AWS Management Console" on the AWS status page

Beyond third-party services, the outage is causing major issues for Amazon's Ring smart home systems, Alexa speakers, and Prime music and video streaming services.

Ring owners took to social media to detail the kinds of issues they're experiencing, from doorbells not working to losing a video feed used for monitoring infants during naptime.

"Eek, just in time for my newly-in-beds triplet toddlers' nap," one owner said. "Now I have no idea what they're doing up there."

The outage is regional, Amazon said, and applies to the "US-EAST-1 Region"  servers, which are housed in Virginia. Moreover, Amazon said it has discovered what's causing issues and is "actively working towards recovering." "

"Amazon Web Services (AWS) is currently experiencing an outage that is affecting some Canvas users hosted in the IAD (North American) region."

I wonder if it’s Chinese Hackers replying to our Diplomatic Olympic protest

🤣 AWS does go down from time to time, just not as often as Comcast/Xfinity.

College Canvas systems that are hosted on AWS are also affected. I have finals this week and my instructor says to let him know if we can’t complete the exam. I can access Canvas but it is extremely slow and exams are timed.

Ds has exams this week. He said his profs are calling and texting everyone to let them know what is going on.

Duolingo is also down, probably uses Amazon World Services. Poor little owl.

They do use AWS

https://aws.amazon.com/machine-learning/customers/innovators/duolingo/

”To develop these custom algorithms (everything from non-native speech recognition to classification for automated scoring), Duolingo uses the PyTorch deep learning framework on Amazon Web Services (AWS). These deep learning models are trained and then deployed into production using Amazon EC2 P3 high-performance GPU instances. Speed and scalability are essential for training since the models may use anywhere from 100,000 to 30 million data points at a time, depending on the problem, in order to make more than 300 million predictions every day.”

I'm supposed to be taking a final exam right now (though the time is flexible) and I'm afraid to because the outage is affecting both MyMathLab and Canvas.

"[12:34 PM PST] We continue to experience increased API error rates for multiple AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. The root cause of this issue is an impairment of several network devices. We continue to work toward mitigation, and are actively working on a number of different mitigation and resolution actions. While we have observed some early signs of recovery, we do not have an ETA for full recovery."

This seems to be the case for college students all over the country. What a terrible time for canvas to go down! So stressful for students. One of mine can’t get in to her classes either, but fortunately doesn’t have a final today.

Canvas is stabilizing for me since 3pm

“[3:03 PM PST] Many services have already recovered, however we are working towards full recovery across services. Services like SSO, Connect, API Gateway, ECS/Fargate, and EventBridge are still experiencing impact. Engineers are actively working on resolving impact to these services.“
