I am stumped this year, for a fun gift. He likes learning how to do new things, so something along that vein is usually how I lean. He’s an audio guy but the things he uses are very specific—he has them all, plus, well, they are very specific and he buys for himself. And … that’s work, and I want to give something fun, something new. He’s into arts, creating things, travel, lots more. Likes to read. Journal. Meditate.

Past hits have been a bass, art supplies, baking/cooking supplies, beer brewing stuff, woodworking tools. Tickets, classes, experiences are always good—but those are a poor choice for our high risk family, so not this year.

Any ideas?

Does he have one those little blow torch things that you can use to burn designs/initials/etc into wood? That might be cool if he does woodworking. My dh has one and he decorates those cheap little raw wood items you can get at hobby lobby and they end up looking so cool!

Interesting! Like a wood burning kit? I will have to see if we have one—I think we might, but it’s a good idea!

Yes! Those were the words I was looking for lol. Dh has one and bought a small little box at Hobby Lobby and put designs all over it. He’s going to put a gift card inside, but the box came out so cool looking! And it was just a cheap box! (He has used the wood burning kit for other things too; this was just the most recent.)

Yes, I have one.  I think.  When you say "arts" is that the whole general fine arts or arts as in specifically painting and such?  If so, Walmart used to sell these very detailed coloring books.  DD bought a few years ago along with a full box of gel pens from Staples.  The coloring books could be individual or he could recruit family members.  The lines are quite detailed.  Not for a beginner.  Something different to doodle.  The box of gel pens contained maybe 48 or maybe more and ran about $10-15!  Each book may have been about the same.

Since he likes journaling, would he have any interest in a paper marbling kit and a book binding kit? So he could make his own custom journal, even if it's more of a one-off project than something he can use multiple times?

How about ax throwing?

"Here, honey. Merry Christmas. It's an axe. It goes with the flannel shirt I stuffed into your stocking."

Scare the bejeezus out of the neighbors. 😉

That made me laugh and almost snort coffee!

I think perhaps we will skip anything with the potential for injuring life, limb, or property this year, ha! Pandemic, after all, and we want to avoid the ER. 😁 So maybe not archery or ax throwing this time around …

He’s been interested in incorporating resin into woodworking projects, so possibly something along those lines, but again — I’m not really sure what he needs for woodwork.

I’m off to check out a mediation cushion, that’s a good idea!

Also, I have ordered a kitchen blow torch for him, since he enjoyed Spy Car’s weed flame thrower so much last year. That’s about as dangerous as I’m ready to go, for now. Any tips on what to pair with a kitchen torch?

Actually, now I'm just looking at the Man Crate site and it's all hilarious to me as a pretty femme individual. Like, there are all these things where they sell you a gift card that you have to work to get. Like, there's one where you have to smash a huge block apart in order to get the gift card.

That site is fun. I have been completely unsuccessful in coming up with literally one single gift idea for my husband this year, so I might order something silly from Man Crates.

Looking at their offerings does remind me, however, of why it's so hard to shop for my husband:

  • Vegetation (so nothing bacon-, jerky- or steak-focused, nothing involving grills)
  • Not into sports
  • In treatment for alcoholism
  • Doesn't like coffee
  • Bad back/physical limitations/not outdoorsy
  • Generally not really into food
  • Does not approve or or appreciate gift cards as presents

This cuts out approximately 94% of the items on the site.

(I'm strongly considering the wooden arcade game kit, just because I think it's funny and he might enjoy showing it off to his gaming buddies.)

Mine collects coins. The large commemorative ones, not money. I got him a coin holder display rack made by a local woodcrafter.
