My computer just upgraded itself without warning. Now it's not working. I hate everything.

Tell me your experience, please.

Crud. I have one that is probably too old to upgrade. It survived Windows 10 upgrading without warning, and we need it for a backup computer.

This is my only computer and I need to submit a ton of work by Monday. I'm infuriated.

@Slache Before you do ANYTHING else with that machine try to see if there is a way that you can get Windows Update to Revert your OS to Windows 10.  If so hopefully it will revert and be OK on Windows 10 again. If there's a way to do that, I don't know what it is, but hopefully you can Google on the Microsoft.com web site to see how to do that, assuming that it is possible.

I am using an old Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. I think it was made in 2008 to 2010.  I'm using this one because my slightly newer but much more powerful machine, a Dell Latitude E6410 would not upgrade successfully from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

On this machine, when I do the Windows Update for Security issues, there is a message that "This machine doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11".  That didn't surprise me.

I downloaded and ran the Microsoft "PC Health Check" App and it showed the issues this machine has.

After reading your OP I am hoping that Windows Update will know enough about my machine to not try to upgrade it from Windows 10 to Windows 11...

I hope you can get your machine to revert to Windows 10!  Good luck!

OP I was curious so I Googled on the Microsoft.com website. That is called a Downgrade. I will try to Copy and Paste from the top of the SERPs page:

Open Settings app on your Windows 11, go to System > Recovery. Under Recovery options, click Go back. 2. Now Go back to Windows 10 screen should appear.Sep 10, 2021

Hubby got it working while I slept and he started on the work. I think it's still 11. I am very irritated. We are switching to Apple very soon.
