Is Florastor to be taken every day, or is it only to be taken short term?

I want to try it for my stomach issues. Is it something you keep taking all the time? Or is it just for a few weeks until things improve? Specifically for IBS type issues.

This will depend very much on how your body responds.

Normally, I only need a six week daily course after antibiotics to build myself back up once I established my base good flora.  I eat a lot of fresh veggies (salads) and avoid a lot of processed stuff so I can maintain a pretty healthy gut flora on my own.

A relative (not under my roof) eats a very limited, highly processed diet with almost no fresh fruits or veg or legumes or fiber. They pretty much need to be on it all of the time because they cannot maintain a healthy gut flora based on how they eat.

Uh, weird analogy, but it's kind of like feeding a sourdough starter.  You're maintaining a microbiome inside you and you have to manage it, iykwim.

Hmmmm. Thanks!! I eat pretty healthy. Oddly, it’s all the veggies that can make things worse, at least for me. I seem to have chronic issues. Florastor is expensive.  I just took the first one today.

Have you tried a low FODMAP diet as part of your sort out of what you can fix?

You can still have bananas, citrus, grapes, cantaloupe, kiwi and berries.

You can still have green beans, carrots, spinach, sweet potato, zucchini and squash.

Brown rice, polenta, oats, and some say limited amounts of black beans are ok.

Oh, yes. I’m doing low fodmap, adding things back in as tolerated. I can’t find anything online that says it’s harmful long term, but I don’t really understand how it’s intended to be taken. The bottle just says 1 to 2 capsules one to two times per day. I’m assuming you can take this as long as you need to. I may take them every day for a few weeks then see what happens if I take them every other day or so.

The s. bouldari isn't colonizing--it would be gone within 5 days--so if your body does well with that strain, you would want to keep taking it. I just take it if I need an antibiotic. One son takes it daily--has for years.

I take one per day unless on antibiotics. If I take two, I will get constipated. My DH can't take it daily, or he will get constipated. I think it's individual based on how you respond to it.

I had some nasty probiotics a few years ago, and I think my gut just doesn't completely recover and might not ever. I eat well. *shrug*

Thanks, I didn't know this.
