Emmy
I want to pick a Canterbury Tales book to read to my boys - any suggestions? I guess I will go with either the Williams or the Cohen but wanted to check here first in case I'm missing something. This is for history to be read aloud by me to an 8yo and 6yo. mazakaal
I'm not familiar with the versions you mentioned, but I read the Geraldine McCaughrean to my boys when they were about 8 or 9yo. We really enjoyed it.
Catherine
I read aloud the prologue with\for my sixth grader, after reading the abridgement, and for both, it was a hit! I stopped to explain frequently and to check for understanding. There were a couple of lines they still repeat and laugh about: (regarding the prioress) "She was by no means undergrown." and regarding the Monk (?): "He was a prelate fit for exhibition." Also, my 7 yo read on his own the retelling recommended in TWTM, Chaucer Cat and the Animal Pilgrima, and liked it. Not so easy to find though. I ordered mine from the UK. If I'd known how much of McCaughrean he'd get, I'd have skipped it.
chai
We read this aloud to dd when she was younger. This year, she read it alone and also read the Cohen version. In her opinion, the McCaughrean version is FAR better. She really wants to read the original now. I told her that she had to wait until she was older due to adult content. Beth in SW WA
Add my vote for McCaughrean. SWB recommends this one in TWTM.
Emmy
Add my vote for McCaughrean. SWB recommends this one in TWTM. There are a couple versions of the McCaughrean - do you guys mean the picture book one or the one that is a puffin paperback? Thanks for the replies! Beth in SW WA
Puffin paperback. Cheap, short & sweet :) I'm nervous to tackle the real thing in a year or so.
