My DD9 has had four exposures that we know of.  Three were at school.  She has not gotten sick from any of them.

I probably wouldn’t bother with a different test, unless of course he develops symptoms. Just test him when he’s returning to school. I think the chances your GFIL was exposed is about nil and I wouldn’t worry about isolating him at all.  Honestly your son’s exposure sounds about as close to zero as it gets.

I personally have not tried to keep anyone separate at home, but it’s not very possible in our house anyway.  If one of my kids had Covid I’d isolate a little more but not just for a low risk exposure.

Oh well if he were asymptomatic, I probably wouldn't bother with other tests if you are planning a PCR for next Tuesday.  If he woke up with symptoms, I'd try to get him tested that day one way or another.  Seems very unlikely for spread given our experience with possible exposures.

I would think Pop could go if everyone knew the situation and were comfortable with it assuming everyone stays asymptomatic into the weekend.

I probably wouldn't bother with trying to isolate him at home with an outdoor exposure.  My teen had a similar indoor exposure last week.  She is vaxxed but is at about 6 months.  ETA - oh, and I should add we're at 1 week since that exposure.  It was in an indoor group of about 25.  There has been no further spread from that incident at all.

I can just tell you what we did for our unvaxxed dd when she had the same type of exposure more than 2 days, outside and Kn95 masked. We just monitored her symptoms and would have tested if she showed any. She did not. We also did not keep her separate—everyone else is vaccinated.

I think the chances of pop being exposed after a Kn95 outside exposure 2+days earlier with an asymptotic child ( 2actually) is incredibly remote. I might have a niggle of concern, but would be optimistic and wouldn’t really entertain it.

So, here are my questions.

1) When would you test DS11?  We'll do an official PCR next Tuesday for return to school Wednesday, but would you do other tests?  PCR?  Binax? I wouldn't test at all unless he became symptomatic

2) My SIL picked up Pop (DH's grandfather) before DS11 and I got home.  So, the last time they were in contact was Wed. at breakfast, very briefly.  They spent a lot of time together the night before.   What are the chance Pop was exposed?  He has 3 doses of Pfizer, but he's 91 so maybe they don't work so well?  We obviously aren't going to our family gathering this weekend, but can he go?  He can go, and I wouldn't be worried too much about Pop being ill when you are talking about outdoor exposure with your ds masked.

3) What are people's thoughts on whether to try to keep him separated at home? I would probably keep a mask on him and crack windows if you had serious concerns about other people in the home becoming ill, but an outdoor exposure with your son masked isn't a likely spread event.  If we were talking about a kid who sat next to him unmasked at lunchtime I'd feel more concerned.

I assume you are vaccinated, not immunocompromised, and wearing a similar quality mask at school? I'm not particularly worried about you passing things along to the kids as the odds are incredibly low.

My concern (which is small) is actually for your FIL, who is still under your roof and over 50. I think he's the more likely candidate for catching the virus since you guys probably haven't been masking at home, he's over 50, and it's been a while since he's been vaxxed.  I still think it's incredibly small odds given that the exposure was outdoors and your ds was wearing a good mask.

------

Anecdotally, my kids' school has <30% of teens vaccinated, the vast majority of students and staff are only wearing cloth masks, and there's been pretty low transmission rates at their schools. Even the elementary schools are looking really good. There have been quarantines there, but very few positives coming out of those. Currently the known positive covid rate is .001% for the district. They post numbers daily and I've been tracking them.  The quarantine rate is higher because exposure to unvaccinated persons = mandatory quarantine. It's sitting at .38% today, and those are mostly from three elementary classes forced into distance learning because of the mandatory quarantine. I'm in a massive district, but things are going a lot better than I anticipated.

I'd test at home with Binax this weekend, for my own knowledge. And have GFIL test before going to family stuff this weekend. If he tests negative I'd say he can go.

Same here, but not a massive district.  Everyone is masked and looking at the school numbers is very encouraging.  It's not 0, but very low.

Surely we’re going to see some good studies of school mitigation measures out of this? I’ve only seen one, but now that the school year has been underway longer and the differences between some school districts are so stark, it seems like we should be seeing more. Schools in high vax areas with everyone masking are doing surprisingly well.
