Rachel in KY
So this is the first year I've really stuck with a grammar program. Ds, almost 11, is working through R&S 5 with no problem, but he's only in Chapter 3. I can't get R&S 5 to correspond to Homer A. Is it me, or is the Homer grammar more advanced and seems to move faster than R&S...Phrases, clauses, intrasitive verbs, etc.? I have the Harvey's, and after we tried to work on the first lesson or so, I shelved it and got the R&S back out. How the heck am I supposed to do this? I'm still trying to understand the BFIB, and have a meeting tomorrow night with another hs mom who's worked through the CW series with her own ds. I'm hoping she'll be able to shed a lot of light on the subject. The bottom line: I'm not a grammar genius. I want to follow grammar guidelines for CW...I just need some guidance. Pam in MA
We've been at Homer a while but we've been using Harvey's. Even that hasn't been that easy; we have a couple of reference books we pull out to help us and I have to spend time trying to understand it all. The grammar in Aesop was very gentle and I've found the grammar in Homer to be challenging. The two things that have helped me more than anything are studying Latin and having a good reference book or two to supplement. We just take it slowly. Also, you can find answers to specific questions at the Classical Writing Message Boards. There's a whole section on grammar.
LizzyBee
I downloaded Harvey's Grammar books from google books. When we couldn't find the info we needed in R&S, I printed the applicable section from Harvey's and we used that. I finally sold R&S and bought the Harvey's books from Amazon. mamaof2andtwins
The grammar we used doesn't touch on transitive and intransitive verbs until the 8th grade book. Basically, I skip what we haven't gotten to in our grammar book and use the Homer's grammar as reinforcement of what we have already covered. While we are on this topic, and not to hijack the thread, but how do you diagram the sentences with DO and PN/PA. I am not going to reteach my children their diagramming strategy after they have been doing it the R&S way for 5 years now. What are your thoughts on this. We switched, because the CW way makes more sense to us, and is less confusing to us. And once I explained the difference to my kids, they were not confused. But I really don't think it matters. Use the method you like best. A DO is still a DO, whether you've got an arrow pointing to it or it's blocked off by a line.
