You don't have to go to confession to attend Mass.

Understood. I guess I didn't phrase the two questions separately enough. Sorry!

No, it really doesn't.   None of the sacraments can be done remotely.

There is an exception to mandatory mass, if you have a legit reason.  Our whole family agrees that being 91 during a pandemic, or living with someone who is 91 during a pandemic is legit.  So, the obligation to attend mass is lifted for us.  But he likes to watch.  And he likes to know that the moment the host is transubstantiated, he is watching.  Even if it's transubstantiated somewhere else.

Totally get it!

To be clear, when I say "it doesn't work", I don't mean that it doesn't lead to Heaven or whatever.  I am just asking whether it follows the church law.

Understood.

We Orthodox Jews had similar questions at the beginning of covid with the added twist that on our sabbaths and holidays we don't actively utilize electrical appliances like computers for Zooming and such. Most said no; some sympathetic and innovative rabbis gave permission for people with mental health issues and similarly serious reasons to leave on a Zoom connection for human  interaction on those no-go times. But we can't make a prayer quorum if there aren't 10 actual in person Jewish males above the age of 13 in a place.

If you post the time(s) (or a range)that do work for you/him, it might be easier to help you. Almost every parish in our diocese is still live-streaming at least one mass per weekend. I would check around your diocese to see which others are doing it a time that works. I believe EWTN is live at 8:00am central still, if that works. It’s not my favorite, but it’s still Mass.

For today I need noon Eastern.

It varies week to week, the issue is kid sports.

so a 9am in California would work for today - I bet you can google 9am mass livestream california and find one. Or in the LA links above.

Does Fr. Mike livestream? I don't actually know. But I just have to put in a plug for him. And for his Bible in a Year podcast. We have been faithfully watching him throughout this pandemic. (Like you, we have not returned to in-person Mass.) Every time we watch Mass from somewhere else, we wonder why we didn't just stick with Fr. Mike. Theoretically, I know there must be other Masses livestreamed/online that also appeal to us, but we haven't found them yet. (I am aware that the individual priest/homily is not the point of Mass. But for me anyway, liking the priest's style/homily helps me focus/get more out of Mass.)

Caveats for anything by Fr. Mike: He talks quite fast. Also, he works on a university campus. Therefore, his homilies are (often?) geared toward that age group, if that makes sense.

Hope you found something that works!
