Other than K12 Human Odyssey, what options are there for narrative world history for middle school? I'm looking for something with the interest level of SOTW, but at a higher level. If there are high school books that are accessible for middle schoolers, that would work, too.

ETA: I'd prefer books written more recently, so that I don't have to worry about censoring on the fly for outdated/racist language, etc.

The Oxford University Press'World in Ancient Times series might fit what you want. I know it has study guides for one volume but not necessarily all.

It has study guides for all volumes, but they are not easy to find. Abebooks was the best place to find them when I was looking a few years ago.

We like the Lucent World History series -- they are topically focused and many are very, very well done.

Any others? It seems that History Quest doesn't have anything for after the middle ages and OUP World in Ancient times is (obviously) just ancients. I know OUP has something that could cover middle ages, but what about after that time period? Is there not really a narrative history for middle school that goes beyond middle ages?

While yes, their heaviest coverage is for ancients, OUP actually goes up through Early Modern (I know, that still leaves Modern history as a hole):

Ancients:
The Early Human World (pre-history)
The Ancient Near Eastern World (Mesopotamia, Sumer, Assyria)
The Ancient South Asian World (India)
The Ancient Chinese World
The Ancient American World
The Ancient Egyptian World
The Ancient Greek World
The Ancient Roman World

Medieval & Early Modern World:
The European World, 400-1450
The African and Middle Eastern World, 600-1500
An Age of Voyages, 1350-1600
An Age of Empires, 1200-1750
An Age of Science and Revolutions, 1600-1800

For something completely different, perhaps OER Project's new World History Project (Origins to 1750, and, 1750 to present), or, their original Big History Project?

Or, especially if this is your second time through the history cycle, what about going with something pretty streamlined like Kingfisher's History Encyclopedia, and dive into various topics of interest with tons of fascinating nonfiction, like those listed in this article.

HQ US History & HQ Modern Times are in the process of being written; US History is due to be published in time for next school year, then Modern - which I assume is planned (roughly) for 2023.
