kbutton Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Does anyone know how musescore works? It seems like parts are free, but I am unclear what is free and not free. My son likes to compose music and would like to find a site where he can compose/upload and also download songs from others. Thanks! Quote
Lucy the Valiant Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 I have a young composer who really loves it, but I'm not 100% sure on which features are in the free version and which ones are in the paid version. His music looks really nice when it's printed out, though! (He sometimes runs into snags with it, and his composition coach helps him out, so I don't think it's super intuitive, maybe. The composition coach uses a different program with Apple but recommended muse score for PC's.) 1 Quote

East Coast Sue Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 My son likes noteflight but I think both musescore & noteflight are good. 1 Quote
Dmmetler Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 (edited) I find NoteFlight much easier to use than MuseScore, and the cost per year for the full version is about the same. I will say that you are far more likely to find arrangements on MuseScore-NoteFlight is part of Hal Leonard, so for obvious reasons they are a lot less likely to have free arrangements of stuff they own the copyright to. If I need Anime music, or video game music, I can usually find it on Musescore even when there are no commercial arrangements available. I do LOVE being able to buy a commercial arrangement on NoteFlight and then edit it as needed for my students. Edited October 14, 2021 by Dmmetler 1 Quote
Arcadia Posted October 19, 2021 Posted October 19, 2021 DS16 is going to be using Musescore for his community college music theory class for music composition assignments. He has used NoteFlight before in his middle school music theory class at the local music and art center previously. I just remembered this thread when I asked him what software his teacher picked. 1 Quote
Loesje22000 Posted October 19, 2021 Posted October 19, 2021 yes, I work on a regularely base in Musescore. The free edition. It has a steep learning curve, but it is easier to use for me then Sibelius (I use musescore in Dutch, and Sibelius is only available in English.) There is a course one can follow, but I learned the most myself, and asked the online community if I hit a wall. I use Musescore only for Choral and Vocal music. When one install Musescore, the first view only gave 'basic' palets to work with. You can put those palets on 'advanced' pretty easily, and that is my standard what I work with. I used Finale in college and grad school, when it was the gold standard, and only stopped using the version I'd used in grad school when Windows 8 refused to play well with it, but it was definitely not easy software to use, and when I started working at a university that used Sibelius as the standard, I found it equally hard to learn. 1 Quote
