Janna
I am out of home made pureed veggies at the moment. I plan on remedying that today, though. However, for the moment, I have some left over mashed potatoes. They have cream cheese and butter in them, as well as some salt. He has never reacted to any food so far and no one in our family has ever had food allergies. He will be 7 months old next week. Should I, or shouldn't I? Edited December 10, 2008 by Janna Said he would be 7 months old next month, meant to say next "week".
JudoMom
I would, but I also use Manwich as my sloppy joe recipe ;), so that might influence your decision about listening to me. Mostly I just wanted to say hi :D!
beansprouts
I think the official answer would be no dairy before 12 months. The reality is many infant formulas are milk based already. I guess if it were me, I would determine whether my 7 month old really needs to eat right now. At that age all my kids were still primarily breastfed. Ellie
I would say no.
Carrie12345
I wouldn't, but I didn't give ds1 any "people food" until he was about 10 months old. Ds10, otoh, was practically having 3 course meals by then.
jenn-
Brandon was eating mash potatoes at 5 months (I figured that had to be better than the cool whip my mom was feeding him). You will need to water them down a bit though.
Renee in NC
I would - I generally just feed mine whatever we are eating.
FO4UR
I wouldn't b/c I have food allergies rampant in our family gene pool. No dairy before 12mo. Those baby guts just don't always handle it well. BUT, if baby is on milk-based formula anyway.....I don't see how that argument would hold. Baby will NOT starve if you give an extra nursing until you get to the store. Got any bananas? Rice?
abbeyej
He's already been on dairy-based formula all this time, right? So I wouldn't bat an eye in your case.
Parrothead
I would feed the potatoes.

swellmomma
I would - I generally just feed mine whatever we are eating. Me too, if it was on my plate they got it too, just mashed or minced, they were all on table food by 8 months. It's just mashed potatoes even with the stuff added in them, the amount of it that he would get would be minimal as I assume his portions are still very small. FO4UR
the amount of it that he would get would be minimal as I assume his portions are still very small. If he's already had milk, it's probably not a big deal...BUT, generally speaking, it only takes a *tiny* exposure of a food to set off a life-long food allergy. The first exposure goes without any symptoms, the second is a mild reaction (like a small rash or a foul diaper), and then each exposure is more and more severe. I say this b/c it is a public board with lots of momma's reading, and I am a *bit* over-cautious with food allergies.
beansprouts
Well I have to make a confession: I gave my dd ice cream when she was five months old. She LOVED it, and cried if we didn't feed it to her fast enough

I have dealt with dairy allergies in my family, dd was born with them, so I know the concern, but from what I understood he has milk based formula and therefore it is not an issue. Janna
Yes, he's on milk-based formula. I'm one of the 3% who can't breastfeed. Tried all 3 times thinking for sure it would eventually work, but it never has. He's been eating home made pureed fruits and veggies for not quite 2 months now. I am aware of the no dairy rule, which is why I asked, but also, knew he was already consuming dairy in his formula.

Yes, which is what I was thinking. My concern was actually more for the salt.

Parrothead
Yes, which is what I was thinking. My concern was actually more for the salt. How any grams of salt is in the formula? Babies up to 12 months shouldn't have more than 1 gram a day. They need a bit of sodium for proper cell function, but only a little.
kat19
My ds(almost 9 months) has has allergy issues so he gets no table food right now. I tried to feed him some stage 3 baby food and he was choking on it(not sure if it's because of his reflux or not). So he is stuck with stage 1 and 2 food, juice and formula. Everyone in my family would love to feed him off of their plate and I say no way.. They think I am over reacting but I don't care.. If you think he can tolerate it, feed it to him.. Do what you think is best for your baby :001_smile: Are you getting ready for Christmas? I can't wait to see how the baby reacts at Christmas time~should be fun!! :D

There was something about being runny and lumpy at the same time that choked them all. Brandon was my food lover and was on a "whatever we eat, he eats" diet by the time he was 8mos old, with the exception of peanuts, shellfish, and eggs. We have no food allergies in the family though, so I am sure that makes a big difference.
Daisy
I would and did. My kids never ate baby food. They went straight to table food.

He was having a tough time with the chunks of green beans in it, so I will stick with mixing stage 1 and 2 food with oatmeal or rice cereal.. Which he seems to like so that's a good thing :001_smile:
