I know we’ve discussed small talk on here before, and there are many who don’t like it and get irritated by it. I know I’ve made this comment before, but something happened recently that has brought it to my mind again.

One of my jobs is in a small coffee shop. I found out today that a customer passed away last month. I saw him, maybe once a month, sometimes less. But, we always had a short chit chat while he waited at the drive thru window. Not much, maybe about the weather, his grandkids, my son in the Army. But, he always had a smile and a kind word, even if we only talked for 30 seconds. I always felt happier after short exchanges, and I had no idea I would be this broken up. Good think it is a cool, rainy day so it is slow.

Anyway, I just want to say that you never know the impact you can have with a smile and a few words.

I'm sorry about the customer.

I found this out after my father died.  He was one of those people who would talk to everyone and he was also very sweet.  After he died, so many people told me how much they would miss chatting with him.  I also found out he'd do things like bring donuts to the bank for the employees when he went there and other things like that - he apparently liked to surprise people with treats at places he'd shop or visit (he went to Boston Market and Burger King a lot, apparently).
