nvm

I didn't intend to offend anyone. It was stated in a "I can't believe I thought that" sort of way. The spirit of it wasn't in the way y'all are interpreting it. It was a chuckle at a child's misinterpretation of something and not a voice of truth against any particular group. In fact, it was quite the opposite like "that was embarrassing".

I hope this doesn't offend anyone here, but dd's bf was telling a story at dinner about how he believed for a long time that Jehovah's Witnesses were killers or very dangerous people. He went on to say "because when I was kid and they came to the door, my mom would always say 'turn the lights off, get down, stay quiet, hide, pretend we aren't home'" 🤣  I guess she never really explained anything else so the poor kid lived years thinking of them that way 🤣

There are several members here who are JW.

I get that, this wasn't in any way supposed to be negative on them. I have no ill thoughts toward them whatsoever. I just thought his childhood interpretation to his mom's reaction was funny.

Ftr, I think it is funny.  I mean, we KNOW some people do that.  Sometimes we can hear the 'ssshhhh'.  My mom was once one of those home but hiding....until she accidentally opened the door one day thinking it was 4 year old  me coming in from playing.  She has been a JW for 48 years now.

Hiding is one of the least offensive things people do to us.  😉 My mom had a gun pulled on her one time by a topless woman.

Tbh when I posted it, I knew you were JW and I didn't think it was offensive or I would have never posted it 🤣  I actually told another friend about it who is JW and she thought it was funny so I didn't think some would be hurt or offended.

A gun?  Wow, I can't image the crazy stuff anyone who goes door to door faces. I think anyone who goes door to door must be very brave ❤️

Scarlett, I'm glad you posted. I could not see how the OP could be offensive but I am not JW so what do I know?

I can imagine a kid having that thought about any kind of door to door contact situation!

Once when I was selling girl scout cookies at an apartment complex, back when parents just let kids run around unaccompanied, a JW woman started screaming at me that she was a JW and it was against their religion to approve of girl scouts, then from there she just became more irate. I stood there frozen, too dumb to leave. A couple of weeks later when I finally told my dad why I was scared, he took me to a JW church and we talked to an elderly couple, then sat and listened to their service. They treated me like a princess and explained how the lady was wrong, not me.  Even now whenever they knock, I just take their pamphlets and say thanks.

I'm glad your dad was proactive with that one and exposed you to others rather than allowing you to stay afraid or create an incorrect stereotype in your mind. That was really wise of him. If more moms and dads were this way, we'd sure have a lot less bias and hate in the world.

That is a really cool story. I like your dad.

Aww how terrifying to you.  That woman sounds like she was unhinged.  What a terrible way to treat a child regardless of how she felt about girl scouts or anything.

When I was a kid I though bay leaves were poisonous. My mom would get freaked out if she couldn't find the bay leaves in the stew to get them out. I always wondered why she would season stew with poisonous leaves. She made a delicious stew so I always ate it anyway 😁
