I am looking for a dedicated music player that doesn't require owning the mp3s.  We use Amazon music a lot and I have kids who would like a music player but we don't allow internet devices (so no smart phone or tablet) to be owned by them and the ones we have are locked down and they have to have special permission.   They have kindles (e ink style) for reading and I got to thinking that maybe someone has come up with something similar for listening to music.  Thanks for any help!

Depending on what you mean by "no internet" I would think an Echo Dot would work; it will be able to stream the music, and doesn't have a screen so the kids won't be able to access things like YouTube or whatever, but they can ask Alexa questions and she'll find/read/tell the answer.

So, something like that may work, if you don't mind Alexa listening in.

Other things I found when I looked on Amazon were either screens, or required a separate headphones or speaker added to them (there is something called a Mighty which syncs up your playlists and lets you take them on the go w/o any internet or data required but it's not a speaker itself, so you need headphones or a bluetooth speaker to listen to it; at $109 itself, plus whatever headphones, it seems pricey to me vs. the $39 Dot, but if you want truly no internet, then maybe that is worth it to you....?)

An old school iPod maybe? if you have CD’s already, then you can(could) use iTunes on a computer to convert.

It kind of sounds like you just want a radio, but then there is no way to control what song is played.

If you don’t want them to access Alexa unfettered, I believe there is some echo dot “kids edition” that only allows kid-friendly stuff or has parental controls or some such?

I was curious about this, though not in the market - we all just use our phones. This looks interesting, but I'm not endorsing it because I just came across it 2 minutes ago.

Mighty - Amazon and Spotify music player.

SanDisk also still makes MP3 players, we used to have one pre-smartphone days.

Yes, that's the one I saw, too. It does require a separate headphones or speaker, though.

*also not endorsing, as I also just stumbled on it while looking as a result of this thread

I’m not sure if they still make these, but there’s probably something similar. Our kids both have Amazon Taps. They are basically Alexa devices that they can carry around, even to the yard if WiFi reaches. They can listen to audible books, Amazon music, Spotify.

I think they were discontinued, but I’m sure there’s another option out there that’s similar!

I completely missed that in your post!  LOL I'm so observant.  😎

They do have Alexa's in their rooms and a fire tv in the family room. They also play from my phone in the car and will listen through the computer sometimes (when I open it so it's supervised)   I should have clarified that we wanted something portable like for in the car etc.  Like an ipod but able to access streaming instead of just stuff we own.   One kid had a SanDisk mp3 player but found it frustrating that she could only load stuff from CDs we bought ages ago 😜 or that we bought electronically but that is limited.  I'm not really wanting to purchase indefinite amounts of music on MP3 but wouldn't mind adding Spotify streaming if it made sense.  The mighty player looks like a good option.  Thank you!

We have Echos. We have the kids versions too. They have been great. They are not portable though.

Yeah they have these already. Just looking for something they can carry with headphones.   And trying desperately to find Christmas gifts for tweens and teens 😜

My older kids have plain iPods.

DD14 has a smart phone that is locked down tight. She has cell service, but can only access the apps I give her permission for. She has calculator, flashlight, Pandora, and texting. I could limit the phone and texting as well, but I want her to have those features. I pay for cell service, though, which you would have to do if you want them to be portable.

Otherwise look at an iPod Touch and put just put parental controls on them.

Yeah I am really not wanting them to have smart devices.  We did that with our older kids and learned from it.   We are waiting until they are older.

Like a touch? Or a shuffle? I don't want an iPod touch and we've had shuffles before but you have to own the music.   So I'm specifically looking for something more like a Kindle but for music.  The mighty player might be the only option.
