Sigh.  I looked at the new IPad in June or so, and I absolutely loved it.  I already have an IPad Pro, an older one but it works perfectly, and this new one is SO much better that I was really tempted.  I don’t actually need it yet so I’m holding off, but if your expectation is that this will be in the family for a long time, I’d get the better one.  It will have new features and sleekness, and it will be supported longer, which can be an issue with IOS devices.

I’ve noticed that generally when I buy a higher end device than needed, in the long run it is more robust for changes in my needs and I’m glad that I did so.  Having said that, I keep electronics longer than most people do, so that plays into my decision making on this.  YMMV.

We got our first iPad in the Spring of 2010, shortly after they came out. We actually won it in a raffle (that we didn't even realized we'd entered). One free ticket with Little League fees.

I used that iPad until December 2019 when I replaced it with a 8th Gen iPad. LOL.

That's because it's going to be a paperweight (or dedicated solitaire device like mine) two years sooner.

Hold out to get the newest device. If his work requires it, maybe they have a loaner?
