Janna
Astonishingly enough, my 6yo ds asked for sloppy joes tonight. We haven't had this in years. Wondering where he even got this from, he admitted it was from seeing a picture of it in his sister's kid's cookbook. I have a recipe - one. But my family doesn't care for it which is one of the reasons I haven't made it in so long. It is fairly sweet - containing a can of gumbo soup as well as brown sugar. It's an all day cooker in the crock pot. I'm assuming my family doesn't care for this recipe because it's too sweet. But this is odd to me because sweetness is not an issue with anything else. Maybe because it's unconventional? I, for one, happen to love it. But anyway, clearly I'm in need of another, different, recipe. I would use the one in my dd's kid's cookbook, but it's too...commercial, if you know what I mean. Anyone want to share? And not Manwich please!;) Thanks! swellmomma
My recipe is easy, I buy club house season package of sloppy joe mix. Brown meat. Drain and rinse. Combine pouch of seasoning, with amount of wate listed on package, tomato sauce and meat. Bring to a boil and then simmer. Serve over toasted buns. THis is a huge hit in my family, and due to using the season package tastes eactly the same each time which for my uber picky son is a good thing. This is less commercial than manwich, but not as nice as homemade from scratch would be. That said the kids love it and it makes a nice treat to use prepackaged seasonings on occasion
Parrothead
Anyone want to share? And not Manwich please!;) Thanks! Well, there goes my recipe. I hope you get a good one or two.
Kris
Well, there goes my recipe. I hope you get a good one or two. Mine too! Don't really like it -- it's too sweet -- but my guys never had my mom's Sloppy Joe's so they don't know what they're missing. I have no clue how she made them -- and I will never ask -- but they were awesome.
Christine
anyone care to share a favorite "sloppy joe" recipe? It looks as if this will be late, but I thought I'd share. As a side note, the original recipe calls for 1 lb. of ground beef. We use 1/3 pound. (This is true for all our recipes -- using ~ 1/3 of the meat required, and because we are used to it, no-one feels like it's lacking.) Nuts, one other side note. My recipe says to cook in slow-cooker or simmer at least one hour. I am NOTORIOUS for forgetting to get the meat out of the freezer till about 30 minutes before it's time to eat. Tastes just fine done quickly. ;) (I'm giving the "original" recipe. Should easily feed a family of 4.) 1 lb. ground beef 1 small onion, chopped 2 Tbsp. regular mustard 3 Tbsp. brown sugar 1 can (10.75 oz.) tomato soup (the "healthy" soups work just as well) 3 Tbsp. pickle relish 1 Tbsp. Worchestershire sauce Brown beef and onion in skillet; drain grease. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer 1 hour. Serve over bread slices (hamburger buns are favored at my house). Paz
I combine 2 recipes: 1 lb ground beef 1 cup onions 1 cup celery 1 T brown sugar 1 T worchestershire sauce 1 T prepared mustard 1 T vinegar 1 tsp salt 1 cup catsup 1/2 to 3/4 cup rice about 1/2 cup of water brown beef and add all other ingredients. Add additional water as needed to cook rice. Cover and simmer for 30 min or until rice is soft. My kids and all their friends love this recipe. TraceyS/FL
My favorite is the seasoning packets too. its what i grew up on! LOL!! We have been making these though, from the Ore Ida website. We don't make them with Tator Tots though - because all i had was cubed hasbrowns the first time and well, we like it better that way. I cook the hash browns on the stove first then put it all together (for our personal preference, we also double the sauce). But my SIL says that sauce wise, this is one of the best she has had - but we've never tried it on buns! LOL!! http://oreida.com/recipes/index.aspx - "Sloppy Tots" is under Entrees (this is the dumbest recipe site i think). - 1 package (32 ounces) Ore-Ida® Tater Tots - 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef - 1 small onion, finely chopped - 2 garlic cloves, minced - 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce - 1/2 cup ketchup - 1/4 cup water - 3 tablespoons brown sugar - 1 tablespoon Heinz Worcestershire Sauce - 1 teaspoon salt - 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Arrange Tater Tots® in a single layer in a 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Bake at 425 degrees for 12 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, brown beef with onion and garlic; drain. Add remaining ingredients except cheese; mix well. Pour beef mixture over hot Tater Tots; sprinkle with cheese. Bake an additional 15 minutes or until mixture is hot and cheese is melted. Kimberly in IN
Not the OP but thank you for the recipes. The one we use is similar to the ones w/ tomato soup, but liked the idea of adding rice to it. Added rice to my recipe for lunch today. Yum and there was more of it to go around. Yea! Rich with Kids
Here's mine. I always use McCormick's mix. I like American cheese and mustard on mine. 1 pkg. McCormick® Sloppy Joe Seasoning Mix 1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste * 1¼ cups water 8 hamburger buns BROWN meat in large skillet on medium-high heat. Drain fat. STIR in Seasoning Mix, tomato paste and water. BRING to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve in buns. This is similar to the recipe I use - minus the relish and add a splash of vinegar. (And same as Christine I don't cook it for an hour)
